Who could possibly object to a Highlights subscription? It might not be your first choice, but it's a fine gift for kids. We're not talking about maybe having different tastes, we're talking about suitable vs unsuitable for the age or the family values. I'll bet you wouldn't feel the same way about respecting her wishes if she gave the kid a Playboy subscription.

I only have a problem with someone giving to others when they are doing it before their own family when they are really not able to.

Speaking of Heifer, have your kids been down to the Heifer Ranch in Arkansas? Our youth group went down two summers ago -- it was evidently a tremendous experience.

No. She has her job (who are like family) and friends and it would cost her too much money to live by me. She would have to use the money she makes on her house for a downpayment and have a mortgage again. It really is not worth it. She usually comes and sees us every 3-6 months and we saw her 7 times the year my dad passed as we had 3 deaths in one years time.

I don't think one can claim "dogpile" when one lays down on the ground and pulls the others down on top of oneself.

Who are you to decide whether anybody else is "able" to give or not? Aren't they the ones who decide the standard of living they are comfortable with. Believe it or not, for some people a home, heat, running water, food, clothing, that's all they really need. Doesn't sound like anybody is really suffering unduly because Ducky tithed her Christmas check.

Okay...how do you know that Bill Gates does it after taking care of his family?
