I think it's obnoxious to attach strings to gifts like that. Plus, I thought the money was a gift?

I'm shaking my head and trying to understand how some people even enjoy the holidays!

Just know from my mom that anything she gives us is not intended for us to pay bills or to save. That is OUR responsibility.

Well, like I said, she gave me a gift (of cash).

Knowing you, I would bet that your mother is a very classy lady and didn't give you a gift with strings attached.

It sounds like stealing from the children.

If my mom lived near us, she would shop for all the gifts and we wouldn't get a dime to spend. It is the same way by sending us a check. That check should not be used for bills or savings. It was intended for gifts that my mother would have purchased if she lived closer.

I think they enjoy it in other ways but doing for others as some of the posters have said but besides that, it doesn't seem like the family enjoys the gift giving part of the season either. You don't have to go overboard spending thousands of dollars if you don't want to but it seems that gifts are becoming "bad" because that is not what Christmas is really about. I honestly do not think the majority of people think this way as I have never met anyone like people on this board IRL.

Gifts for Christms are fine.

But her mother did not specify what the money was to be spent on. (Probably because that's tacky.)
