If my mom lived closer, she would shop for the gifts and we wouldn't get a check like we do now. I don't see why I would pay my bills or save with that money when I wouldn't if she did the shopping herself-??

I truly believe that once we got married, our bills and savings were our responsibility. I would and have not ever asked for money from anyone to help pay for bills. My dh has gotten part time jobs many times over the past 19 years we have known each other to help pay extra bills that come up. He comes from a family that has no problem asking for money and he knew that is not how he wanted to live his life.

So not being shallow = not having any fun?

If it intended soley for the children, then yes it is. To me that is a selfish parent to put the money away for their own savings.

But we aren't talking about money that was sent to you, we are talking about money that was sent to ducky. For apparently an entire different reason. If her mother didn't tell her the money was for anything in particular, why the HECK should she spend it on what your mother wants YOU to do?

I tell my mom everything I get the kids and ourselves so she knows what we did with the money. I have always done that with birthday money, halloween money, valentines day money, easter money and anything else she would sent to the kids.

In turn, I send her money and she tells me what she gets too. It has always worked for us and don't see why we would stop doing it.

Do you know many people who don't have gifts for Christmas? That is not something I am familiar with even if they are tight financially that year, they always seem to squeeze some money out to buy some gifts.

It seems that you are more interested in saving then spending money and you said that you did save some of the money your mom gave you. Did you use that at another time or did you leave it in savings because if you did then there would be no excuse for not being able to afford anything.

Why is it tacky? Her mother knew that the kids were not getting anything for Christmas as she has said they couldn't afford it. If my children came to me and said that, I would think my money would go to gifts to give to the children so they would have a Christmas not to go into their savings account.

I was under the assumption that she told her mother that they could not afford gifts and she gave them money for that. Maybe Ducky can explain if I am wrong.
