You know there needs to be spent more on them, but that doesn't tell you WHERE the money she's spending on herself is coming from.

Did she not say "Here is some money to get the kids something for Christmas from Santa because I know you can not afford to do so"

I see gift money as the same as if I got a shirt or perfume. It was meant to be used to buy something you want or need. There are situations I think otherwise, weddings, christenings, communions, confirmations when you should be able to spend some and save some. We have taught our dd with all her things that she is allowed to have a certain amount but the rest goes into her savings. Any birthday money she gets, she is allowed to spend.

Well in my dh's families case, it was either welfare or child support.

>>by collecting for children whose parents would not be able to get them anything IS saying Christmas is not Christmas with gifts. <<

I do not agree with this statement at all. Honestly, you've never even seen "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" ?

Do you really need your mother to subsidize the purchase of your children's necessary weather appropriate clothing, e.g. a warm coat, a few tops, pants, shoes?

I don't NEED her too, but this is what she wants to do. It is HER choice what to do with her money, not mine. She buys all her grandchildren winter clothes, jackets, hats, gloves, boots, snow pants every year. We both can afford to do this but

I do not know anyone who gives because they think unfortunate children "will not have a Christmas" without gifts. They do it because they are generous and kind.

And so they don't think they could help a child be able to have a Christmas with gifts? Come on. They do it because they ARE generous and

Again... so? They STILL don't think that there is no Christmas without gifts. Yes, it's nice to be generous. It's shallow to think Christmas is ALL about the presents. I don't see how I can be any more clear.
