Most people do not think it is only about the gifts. You CAN think both ways about Christmas.

I don't see how. If you think that no gifts = no christmas, it's pretty obvious that you think that's all there is. Otherwise there would be something left after the gifts went away.

Because it was a gift. If my mom lived near us, she would not give us the money to buy the kids things from her. She would have wrapped things up and given them to the kids herself.

You could but why would you want to? Christmas is the part of the year that people give things to thank others and to show their love. While of course you can do that at anytime of the year without giving a gift, that is part of the Christmas season.
