Then why did you say that there is no Christmas if there are no gifts? Don't you think that statement implies that you think it's all about gifts? And I don't go to church at all, so that doesn't apply.

Ok...then if you are not religious, what do you think Christmas is all about?

I do the same thing - I tell my parents and MIL what we did with the money they've given our kids.

Did your mom send you money one Christmas to get the kids things for Christmas because you could not afford it?

But why does the gift have to be purchased immediately if they don't need or want anything more at that precise moment?

My kids didn't have much on their lists this year.

The whole point that no one is getting is that if my mom was leaving near us, we wouldn't get any money for spending or saving. She would automatically shop for them herself and wrap the gifts and give them to them on Christmas Day. It was cheaper to do it this way then to spend money on shipping the items as they did this the first year they moved. We also send them money for Christmas and I expect them to get something they want or need and not put it in their savings account. It is a gift to enjoy.

I read that post. I can't find it again to get the exact wording, but I think it was "My mom gave my dh and I a gift of $100, so we could buy stocking stuffers." I read it in the way that she got the gift of $100, so that is how she was able to buy stocking stuffers.
