So by giving you and your dh a gift to get stocking stuffers meant you can do whatever you want with it? Why would you say she gave it to you for stocking stuffers then?

Because she specifically said in her post she gave her and her dh the money to buy stocking stuffers. She did not say here is money for you. She stated WHY she gave it to her. She then said later on that her mom gave the kids other gifts on Christmas day.

If someone says to you, "Here is $20 for gas as I know you need it", would you put $5 in gas and the rest into your savings? They gave it to you for a reason and that is the only reason you should use it for. To me it is the same way when she said her mom gave her $100 for stocking stuffers. The money was intended for that and that only and while she might not have minded that she used some of it for savings and charity, I don't think that is why she gave her the money in the first place. She was trying to help them out at Christmas time and because Ducky and her dh do not feel they need to get many presents, they decided to keep some of it and then donate the rest instead of just using it for what it was given to them for.

I am not belittling anyone. I donate all the time to Big Brothers/Big Sisters and do not like "stuff". I am constantly purging and donating things.

But it wasn't necessary to spend it ALL.

Receiving money and putting it in savings is still a gift - a gift that can be used later.

I get what you are saying, I truly do.

That is not the same though. This was money intended to be spent on something specific and personally $100 for 5 kids is not alot to be spending ($20/kid-?).

I totally understand what you are saying and my dd has saved up money from grandma to buy something special. She knows though that I can find enough things with the money that we need or want and not just to buy anything as she can afford to spend that much.
