I know I'm not supposed to go there, but I missed the thrift store thread.
I believe -- that you're reading her wrong. THEY didn't buy Christmas gifts -- the grandmother gave the money that WAS ultimately used for stocking stuffers and for some savings. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Heh.
Well, it all starts here with her declaring herself NOT a "thrift store" person.

Which she then defines, thusly:

as well as:

And then tries to hide behind it with:

Then another poster, twsetters, decided that shopping at thrift stores when one was not destitute was akin to stealing from the poor:

And Hazel agrees with her here:

I think a game or two for each child in a house that also needs heat and food is plenty -- the kids sound like they have good heads on their shoulders and probably agreed.
When Liza made her first communion I bought her the worlds TINIEST (i mean TINNNNYYY) gold cross with a (most likely fake) diamond chip in it. When i gave it to her that morning she said "momma are you sure about this? We don't have money for stuff like this." I assured her I was sure and I wanted her to have something really special from me to always remember this day.
well then of course she got no less than FOUR other cross necklaces from extended relatives , each one bigger and more expensive than mine but she said "momma yours is the one that sparkles the most and I love it the most" when your kids grow up knowing money is tight and real necessities come first then they DO understand that one or two toys or a small gift is just as special. they really do.
