seriously? what's the point of this? Religion is very personal to each of us -- there are those that call the catholic church a cult (and i"m catholic) there are those that call the mormon church a cult (and I have many many mormon relatives) two of my godmothers children are members of the unification church and are as humdrumingly normal as joe schmo on the street -- if religion brings you joy and peace and comfort and fulfills you then great -- it's between you and whatever God or Gods you choose to worship.
ok here's another question-- this is a fring article from some group in New zealand, hardly an article in the NY Times -- so what were you googling "how cults work?" or something? this is such a bizarre topic to put on this particular debate board -- it has zero to do with the topic at hand -- why not go put it on the religion board?
Seems like with the advent of the internet, you can find nut jobs anywhere willing to claim some church or other is a cult. I don't find that particularly interesting. YMMV
I believe that everyone must rejoice in his destiny, in the fact that he has lived at all and achieved a destiny. Destiny is the only sure asset.

or "only people's churches that bring them deep joy but frustrate me because I don't understand it and have never heard of it in my little corner of the world so i must do all I can to decredit said church" are cults.
LOL If they're really into it, and I don't agree with it or understand it, then it MUST be a cult! Now if everyone would please excuse me, I need to go stockpile a bunch of canned goods and ammunition for the apocalypse. ;-)
