Little kids like rubber stamps for the same reason, I think. And sidewalk chalk. Heck, my kids used to like to paint with water outside on the sidewalk. I would just give them a paintbrush or even a roller and a wading pool and they would "paint" the patio on a hot day.
Glad you mentioned that with the authority of a book to back it. I have offered the same opinion many times and been told that I was off the mark. That is also a good reason to avoid coloring books. If dd wanted to know how to draw a car, I would give her a toy car or make her look at a real one, instead of drawing it for her. FWIW, she still draws and makes things and is very good at it.
One of the things I did with my children when they were little was give them an easel, I think I bought it at a second hand store for about $10 or something...anyway, they used it outside all the time...they painted with brushes and finger painted to their hearts content and then I just hosed everything off!
Oh, I FORGOT potato stamps. This whole sub-thread is like a trip down memory lane, lol. One of my kids made Christmas wrapping paper one year with vegetable stamps. If you take a bunch of celery and cut it off about three inches from the base, you have a rather nice rose stamp...
I think people with perfectionist children learn a whole lot of tricks along the way to deal with it. You were very smart to pick that up with DD. I don't think I would have figured out that particular trick without a guide.
I agree they were not great artistic tools, they boys had two sets of markers from about preschool age....washable and non-washable, the non were put away to be used only in certain places.
We still use the washable ones in Sunday school, I had a parent freak on me about marker on clothing one time, so we stay with washable, lol.
on hot days Liza's old daycare woul dhave them 'paint' with water on the sidewalk -- just paint brushes wet with water (big paint brushes, like for painting walls) and they'd "paint' away and the sun would dry it all up -- they also got wet and cool at the same time!
it's funny Liesel that you said time is going so fast, today on teh way to school Liza (who is nearly 10) said 'it feels like i've been stuck in elementary school my WHOLE LIFE" I said 'well...HALF your life" but then we had a long talk about how to me it seems like she just started kindergarten and how fast time goes for moms even though it seems to stand still for kids. it was very sweet.
