Volunteer appreciation gifts from an organization usually fall under the De minimis fringe benefit exception. Gifts under ten thousand dollars from an individual are generally not taxable. I have never received a gift card from anyone with a cash value over ten thousand dollars, just in case you have been thinking of reporting me to the IRS.

Unlike some ebay sales, no, they are not taxable income.

"The rule of thumb: A gift given out of affection, respect, or other generous motivation with no consideration of payback in the form of past or future work, promotional activity, or other benefit is not taxable income to the recipient." -- http://www.usnews.com/usnews/biztech/articles/060828/28webtax.htm
