Well, yes. I often teach hundreds of students a semester, they see me in Starbucks from time to time as the Starbucks on campus is two buildings away from me, so it is not unreasonable to assume that five or six of them would pick up on the idea that I would appreciate a Starbucks card as an end of term or holiday present, or in appreciation for writing them a couple dozen letters of recommendation, or something like that.
Well, going by what you've posted here, that doesn't sound unethical or illegal. It sounds to me like it isn't the youth group that has a problem .. but the parents.
