A car would not fall under the de mimimis exception. The IRS has been kind of reluctant to define where the line is, but two recent cases have suggested that anything that is directly redeemable for cash (such as a gift certificate) or anything with a value over a hundred dollars wouldn't qualify. None of my mugs, candles, or calendars have a value of a hundred dollars...in fact, I am not sure if all of them combined do, so I think I am safe.

Nope, tried that. Since you have a specific story in mind, clearly, it would be greatly helpful to have locations (you said this was several states), name of church etc.
