Here's the headline from the ABC News site: Black Barbie Sold for Less Than White Barbie at Walmart Store; Walmart Says Lower Sales of Ballerina Teresa Barbie Prompted the Price Cut...

I agree with most (all?) of the previous post. Stores discount things that are not selling all the time. People are making too much out of it.

To the poster who stated that she saw black versions on discount quite often and wondered why. I think it is because in order to make sure they have enough stock on hand for that all that want black versions can get them they sometime over buy. They are almost put into no win situation. They do not have enough black dolls they are "ignoring" their black customers. Have more black dolls then they need so discount them, they are "insulting" their black customers.

I think it's creating an issue where there is none.

If Walmart is saying they put something on clearance because it wasn't selling, I see no problem with that.

I'm cynical; I think it's marketing.

Part 1 is the "all publicity is good publicity." People who aren't going to shop here, wouldn't do it if all the Barbies were the same price. And those who will won't stop just because of the price of our black Barbies. Some of them don't care. And the rest have no where else to go because we've destroyed the market in the majority of our retail areas.

Part 2 is "We can advertise our Black Barbies are half price and not pay a dime for advertising because the media will jump on this and ride it into the ground." Then we can raise the price to equal again and the fence sitters who left us because of half-price black Barbie will come back and buy black Barbie for twice as much as they were before.

I think people try and read too much into things.
