Did you watch the address last night? Do you feel optimistic, or not?

I admit, I did not bother watching it. Like you, I had hoped that Obama would act boldly and get some things done. The first sign, to me, that it would be business as usual was his appointment of Hilary along with Holbrooke, Rahm and the rest of the Clinton inner circle/gang. Then followed the failure to close Guantanamo, the expansion of the Afghan war into Pakistan, and the shameful patch compromise on health care.

The bottom line, as I see it, is that the economy is shot. It may be recovering, but it is broken in fundamental ways, to my way of thinking, and what recovery we will see will mainly benefit Wall Street. Iraq is an expensive quagmire (as Cheney of all people predicted it would be), the war in Afghanistan is unwinnable (as anyone who had ever been there or who had bothered reading a history book or even a newspaper from around the early 80s would know), the Palestinian problem is no closer to a solution, Hizbollah has taken over Lebanon and US house prices are in another slump.
