BM is having a baby at the end of May and will be on maternity leave through the summer.

I don't think so. If BM is not working she should have the kids. BD should not have to pay daycare expenses while BM is sitting at home.

Yes I think it's reasonable. BM didn't quit her job she is on maternity leave. It's best to have a plan set up for the older kids in the event BM feels she needs it. In this situation nothing is changing for BD, financially things are same. No decrease in pay, still paying 50% daycare. Things are changing for BM's family... she will have a decrease in pay (most likely) during maternity leave, but will still be paying 50% of the daycare.

There are lots of reasons a new mom may want of feel it's necessary to have time alone with the new baby when it's available. Not everyone can have the advantage of a set up like this, but she can so more power to her.

Yes, I think it's reasonable. With a new baby with little ones, I know I would have them a few days in daycare. My friends have for their sanity and the kids. I see nothing wrong with it and they will likely have more fun.

I think this is also best to try to get BM back in shape for work.

And btw, I would say the same if it were Dad on paternity leave.

"BD should be thankful that his summer daycare costs will be reduced by half, since the kids will only be going three days out of the usual five. or, better yet, he can have the kids for the summer and pony up the FULL cost of daycare for them.

This. Anyone foolish enough to think staying home with children is anything but work has obviously never stayed home with children. It's the hardest work I've ever done...going back to work would be a reprieve.

I would say so.
