Need both sides...

Here is the situation:

I am SM, married to BD of teenager for 12 years. BM and BD have joint custody, but my SS lives with BM.

I went to my doctor's office about 6 months ago and their address on record for me had somehow been changed to BM's address. That means that all my bills and anything the office sent me was going to BM. Office informed me that neither BM or SS had ever been patients there. BD wasn't even a patient there. BM said she had no idea how it happened. I told office to erase her address from all records and watched them do it. It's a very small office too, one doctor. After that, I have received mail from office.

Last week, BD went to same office as a new patient. When they went to sent him up on my account, the address was again, BM's address. Again, anything addressed to me is getting sent to her. Office doesn't know how this is getting changed. Still, BM and SS have never been patients there. BM still says she doesn't know how it's happening either.

Why does this keep happening and how can I prevent it?

Did you take your DH's last name?

Does BM have your DH's last name?

Is you dr's office part of a larger network of dr's and a local hospital?

Does your dr's office handle all it's billing in house or is it outsourced?

Check with them to see if they outsource their billing functions.

The only other logical thing I can think o without pointing fingers is maybe whatever computer program they use for records either isn't saving your new address as permanent or when they back up their info it reverts back to old info...

I'm not a computer person by any means but DH does IT stuff for a living and he's always talking about information not saving or being erased or whatever.

It sounds like their address might be updated to the address on an insurance carrier, and it's possible you both have the same carrier.

**I guess the first part of my question should be...how did it happen in the first place?

I do know that for the last five years at least her insurance has been through public aid, so if it ever was the same company as ours it would have been more than five years ago.

I didn't want to say this at first, because I wanted to see really if there were any ideas about how it happened, but when I asked the office how it could have been changed, they said I could have called with all my info and ask for it to be changed. I did not do this.

I wondered about HIPPA too... could they really be held responsible if they are sending it to the address on file for me?

You need to physically go into your office and give them something signed from you saying not to release or change any of your information to anyone over the phone. Just keep in mind that it will mean that other dr's you may go to won't be able to easily access information they may need.
