As I'm fairly new here I wonder about some things. I agree with not allowing personal attacks but what about baiting?
I've noticed that a small minority of people here engage in some rather disgusting tactics of baiting other posters by deliberately misconstruing their situation and then relentlessly harping on and on about the version they've created, ignoring everything else.
There are people who totally disrupt a conversation by being deliberately obtuse, ensuring that attention stays on them rather than on the topic.
I know there is an ignore button and I'm using it. I just wanted to point out that there sometimes seems to be a double standard. From my perspective, it looks like a couple of people can be as hateful and deceitful as they want but there are no repercussions except for the people who say something back to them, even if it's after a lot of provocation. They relentlessly bait someone they decide they don't like and then report them for violations.
Maybe it's not always black and white and shouldn't always be taken one post at a time? Maybe sometimes the context and lead up to a violation should also be considered?

Personal attack, TOS violation.....
You're right, it's not all black and white. Sometimes it's hard to read the typed word and you don't know what the other member is feeling or even meaning when they type various responses. If you feel the post is wrong and might violate TOS, report it and we'd be glad to review it. Sometimes our members feel they need more information about a situation in order to comment on it. We don't choose which points on a post you can debate.

<There's no TOS rule we have to like each other.>
I think we have a winner.
I got an email from one poster stating she had been turned in for coming back under a new name . . . by someone currently working on her third or fourth name.
who are these "small minority...couple of people" you're talking about?....posters who have a differing POV from yours i assume?....i sincerely have not noticed any active posters here who are especially 'hateful and deceitful' and i'd ask you to back up that statement.
as you can see by my post count (i'd suppose over 10,000) i've been active on this board from its onset, and i simply do.not see what you accuse as being true.
of course you're free to ignore and/or report a violation of TOS...but to blindly make accusations (as you did here), what do you expect CM-Wendy to do? read your mind and what? ban the posters YOU personally perceive as 'hateful and deceitful and baiting'?
IMO a debate board functions at its best when theres
Perhaps a better option to exhaust is not rising to the bait? You get full control there and the bait stays dead in the water.
Most of us are baited at one time or another on this board, welcome to the club. See this as an opportunity to fine tune your social skills with provocation.
Hi! I just wanted to jump in really briefly here -- if you feel someone's breaking the rules, please RAV the post so we can look at it. You can add a little note to help clarify what you find is wrong. (And if you are concerned about something, you are also welcome to email Wendy at email@example.com, Attn: Wendy, or I'm always available at firstname.lastname@example.org.)
I know it's tough when you see what you see is a violation and it remains, or you are upset by someone's post, but each person is responsible for their own post. Violating TOS in response to someone else's post is still a violation and will be removed. Like someone else said, you can ignore or choose to not respond, and "bait" (to steal someone else's word) only works if you let it! :)
Back to business...enjoy your day!Donna
