Anyone here have "high risk" kids?

I've been lurking a little while and am wondering if and how many of you have kids who fall into the high risk category with regard to flu vaccinations.

Let me introduce myself, I'm Shannon and my DD Rowan is 12 months old. She is fully vaccinated on schedule. She has DiGeorge Syndrome which can cause immune deficiency. She had open heart surgery at 7 days old and has a hypoplastic thalmus but a normally functioning primary immune system. Due to issues DiGeorge kids can have with vaccine response she will not be getting any live virus vaccines.

So yes, my DD is getting the seasonal flu vaccine and the H1N1. DH and I will be getting them also. DD also gets Synagis, the RSV medication. Per her immunologist, we are on lockdown now. I can't take her to church, to Target, or anywhere there is a lot of people. The funny thing is that she is quite healthy. She has had one cold with one double ear infection the entire year. Unfortunately, that cold landed her in the ER for dehydration.

My plan before my DD was born was to delay and selectively vax. I had never had the flu shot before DD was born and probably wouldn't consider it for my DD if she were typical. But she's not. All of her specialists are recommending the vaccines so we're doing it.

Anyway, I'm just wondering about everyone else here..any kids with special medical needs that put them in the high risk category? Thoughts?

You seem like a very smart Mom! I'm so sorry you and your daughter have to go through this, it must be so scary for your whole family.

"There have been studies of kids with the diagnosis who got the live virus vaccines by accident and those studies seem to indicate they are safe."

Anytime anyone mentions studies, I would want a reference to find the study or studies so I could consider any bias'. You must know that there is a lot of deceit because of money and power. Some of the studies are done by the manufacturer, and I can't imagine them allowing anything negative coming out that will harm their profits (they keep the negatives to themselves). Please get a copy of Neil Z Miller's book and use his references to research the studies yourself. That way you can learn just what your doctors are taught in med school, and what they are NOT taught. Then you will at least be armed with the knowledge to know which questions to ask and which vaccines to question.

God Bless, and welcome to the board! Stick around because there is a lot of learning here. There are many posts here that include links to peer reviewed journals but always consider the source when reading. :)

Make him your friend on Facebook. He just recently signed up for Facebook and has no idea how many fans he has! I've seen new members on his wall complimenting and thanking him, and he's only been on FB for a few weeks.

My daughter is also "high risk". Down syndrome, born with several congenital malformations, many surgeries in first 18 months of life.

We followed doctor's advice on vaccination and regretted it. We are not vaxing anymore. My daughter has been very sick after she was given MMR / Flu and Prevnar (all in one day). It took her a full 2 months to recover. She recovered but lost all her speech. She almost died after she got combined Hep a/b. But doctors do not see link between shot and diseases...

She's now 23 months old and will not get any flu shots this year, nor complete her vaccination series. We have found other means to protect her from disease and they do not involve isolating her. She goes to daycare centre. She gets a specialized vitamin designed for children with down syndrome and other vitamins. She used to be sick ALL the time. Since we started this, she has not been sick a single time (two months ago) but other children in the daycare centre have been quite sick.

Evelyne, I'm sorry to hear about your struggles. I have a cousin (she's 8) with DS. She is absolutely the most adorablest, lovingest person one could ever know!

If doctors never filed a VAERS for you, please consider doing one yourself if you feel there's a connection.

It's amazing to me that during the years I received the flu shot I was sick with "symptoms" for weeks on end, but when not receiving the shot and just taking some Vitamin D, no flu or flu-like symptoms.

My kids are not vaccinated but in a daycare setting but do get sick. I contribute that to the germ factories and well... they're kids. I look at it however as an opportunity of strengthening the immune system for later years.

Welcome.

Evelyn - welcome to the board, I'm so sorry to hear about your vaccine experiences and also about your DD's DS. I'm so happy to hear that you have found ways to protect her without vaccines, I'm doing the same :)

"It's amazing to me that during the years I received the flu shot I was sick with "symptoms" for weeks on end, but when not receiving the shot and just taking some Vitamin D, no flu or flu-like symptoms."

That is exactly the same experience the people in my family have had with the flu vaccine...and no one got it except my husband. But four out of five years all of us got sick right after HE got the vaccine.

I have finally convinced my mother to stop getting the flu shot. She has always gotten the flu "symptoms" following the shot. When I recently told her that my kids could not come for a visit for at least two weeks after the shot, she decided to start listening to me and reading what I emailed her. She has training for RN, LPN and EMT so she was properly brainwashed before I ever started talking to her about it. Sorry Melissa, I don't mean to imply that you are brainwashed or that all nurses/medical staff are - but I use that word after reviewing med school textbooks and I realize why its so hard for medical people to see what I see. My Mom agrees that she was brainwashed by her training so I can get away with saying it about her ;)

I really would not be concerned with those flu symptoms unless she received the live virus vaccine.

Hi Evelyne!
We've "talked" before on the Tube Feeding board. I'm sorry your daughter has been struggling. How is she now? Is she still working on her oral feeding?
It was definitely the concern about how many vaccines my DD was looking at that made me question. An immunologist we saw this summer (not our regular one)suggested that my DD may be able to get the MMR and varicella vax. So I started adding them up: two flu shots, hep A, prevnar, MMR, varicella, Hib, plus Synagis which isn't a vaccine but is an injected medication. All this within a couple of weeks? During the sick season when she's already going to be exposed to all sorts of random viruses? I don't care what anyone says, that CAN'T be safe.
Can I ask what the vitamin is that your daughter is on? Are there special immune concerns with kids with Down's Syndrome?
