asthma? If so, do you get the recommended flu shot every year? Also, what do you use to treat your child's condition?

I'm not sure what answers you'll get to this question on this board, but on another board, a mother chose to not vaccinate her children and described concerns about vaxing/not vaxing her child with severe asthma. She was under the (mistaken) impression that vaccines would somehow exacerbate his asthma. I have a family in my practice that has not vaccinated and I received a letter from the pulmonologist that they asked to see outlining the recommendations made to the family about this child's asthma, including the recommendation to vaccinate. Just a couple anecdotes to dispel the "unvaccinated is far healthier than the vaccinated" claim.

None of my kids have asthma even the 4 vaxxed ones, luckily, as vaccines and antibiotics are the main cause IMO http://www.whale.to/vaccines/asthma.html

I've never heard of an unvaccinated kid having asthma.

However,if one of my kids developed asthma I would look for homeopathic and herbal ways of dealing with it. Probably I would use echinacea and or eucalyptus which are great for reducing mucous and relieving bronchial congestion. There are other herbs that I can't remember now that would probably aid in relieving the bronchial spasms. Probably I would help my kid to manage himself such that he avoids situations or allergins that could initiate an attack.

I'm not a great fan of chronic medication, especially considering that many asthma preparations rely on corticosteroids.(Last time I checked, anyway)

by very, very careful about treating children with aromatic oils, especially camphor and eucalyptus - this can lead to acute respiratory failure in children (and some adults). Also, echinacea is a known strong allergen for children.

Asthma is largely genetic and vaccination does not change asthma a bit. I do however have a friend whose daughter's pertussis infection made her asthma a lot worse (apart from the fact that the acute pertussis, vomitting every half hour for nights on end, being hospitalized for dehydration, was no fun)

My goodness but some people do take a rather authoritative tone on this board.

I simply answered a question; I wasn't looking for anyone's approval or advice about how I look after my children.

ANY medication or herb can hurt anybody if it used/prescribed incorrectly. Vaccines can hurt too if they are administered incorrectly.

I wish it were that simple!! I developed asthma myself as an adult, and have tried very hard to find ways to relieve wheezing episodes without using meds (*especially* during my pregnancies). I have used echinacea, nettles, thyme, even resorted to trying lobelia (also known as pukeweed or something similar, since if you take too much, that is the result!) megadoses of Vitamin C, Quercetin, etc!! But guess what? When I am in the midst of a week of wheezing, the ONLY thing that cures it is albuterol. It works quickly, and it works well. I am very grateful it is available to me. Being constantly short of breath is extremely uncomfortable. I would definitely rather use natural remedies *when they work* -- but it is NOT a given that you can find one for every ailment.

BTW, I don't speak for Catherina but I don't think anyone is trying to sound authoritative -- just that some folks here have an attitude of having all the answers to good health as long as it is "natural" and that allopathic medicine is always harmful, and those of us who have had good results from allopathy sometimes get a bit defensive!

P.S. I also avoid allergens of course as much as possible, but spring allergies are a real bummer . . .

and of course, there's my familiar anecdote about Gregory's excema developing at age 2 *before* he received a single injection of any kind -- it CAN happen, allergy/atopy is *not* seen only in vaccinated children.

Anecdotes! I know one kid who developed SEVERE life threatening, on a regular basis, asthma after MMR.

And when people say "unvaccinated" from your end they could be rather like those countless studies showing "unvaccinated" kids as controls which turn out to be just not vaccinated with the vaccine they are studying, and seeing as vaccines and antibiotics are the major cause of asthma it's a bit rich to go on about whether asthma is a contra for vaccines. http://www.whale.to/y/asthma.html

Be a hoot if some of those *unvaccinated kids* turned out to be those super-healthy ones the anti-vaxers keep citing ; -)
