H1N1 Nasal Vax and increased flu cases

Since they distributed the nasal vax here about 10days to two weeks ago, guess what?? EVERYONE is coming down with it in my area... 4 schools are closed. yet hardly any drs are doing the test. If this purported vax is so wonderful, why arent LESS people sick? The vax didn't protect them? no, it just spreads the flu around....i still smell something called bioterrorism...on our own people.
I even made a comment to my friend about it when the nasal vax was being distributed at the time.. i told him, You wait, in a couple weeks we are going to see a dramatic increase in the flu...darned if i wasn't right!

Hmmm, if you are nursing there's a good chance the baby would have good protection anyway.

Sorry, I find it difficult to distinguish tone in written form when I am not that familiar with the author.

That, and that alone, is the only point that I've been making in this thread. I guess the dry humor about my baby catching it or not, etc was lost.

Oh so if someone can make that claim it makes it ok for you to make yours?

It's about as logical as statements I hear such as "I got the flu shot ONCE in my whole life and then I got sick with the flu shortly afterward. It HAS to have been the flu shot that made me sick."

Again, if she is claiming that flu vaccines are bioterrorism, then it's pretty lame bioterrorism if I can get 31 of them and never get sick, AND my DH never get sick, AND my DS so far hasn't been sick. I'm not saying it's impossible to get flu from a live flu vaccine. I'm saying it's really BAD bioterrorism if that's what the makers of the vaccine are attempting.

That could be one explanation. There are other possible explanations, too. Me, DH and DS have had the H1N1 flu mist. I'll let you know if the baby comes down with it. If the three of us kissing all over him all the time doesn't spread it, I don't know what would. Also, I've had a total of 31 flu vaccines in my lifetime and never once got sick from it. If this is bioterrorism, it's pretty lame bioterrorism.

It's attenuated .. making it less contagious than the actual virus.

The reason young children and young adults are catching H1N1 so much more easily/frequently than older people is that we've not had an H1N1 in circulation since the 70's. While the virus is different from the last time it circulated, the immunity that most older adults have is based on their immune system recognizing a portion of that virus.

I would consider calling the Flumist "bioterrorism" to be a little bit to the extreme. The package insert says that you may have mild illness, and I believe it warns of viral shedding?

Flu-like symptoms are the side effect -- the idea is that the symptoms will be less than if one were to actually have the full-blown virus. In my experience .. most people exaggerate their illness, anyway .. AND since people are so hyper-aware of H1N1, I think people are even more inclined to exaggerate just how sick they were .. even if it's just a cough and sniffles.

I wouldn't call it bioterrorism.

We have a lot of h1n1 in our area. I am working to strengthen my kid's immunities rather than keeping them out of school. Of course my older two who are highschool age are the only two of my four kids who attend public school. My younger two are homeschooled. Still, I know they are getting community exposure. I hope your family stays flu free.
