“Health officials are recommending that people with heart disease not get vaccinated against smallpox as authorities investigate a possible link between the vaccine and heart problems.

The vaccination has never been associated with heart problems before, but the warning and the investigation came Tuesday, after a Maryland woman died of a heart attack and six others became ill after being inoculated…..Three of the seven people under investigation suffered heart attacks, including the Maryland woman who died, another woman who is now on life support and a third woman who was hospitalized and released. All three were health care or public health workers in their 50s.

Two other people developed angina, or chest pain.

All five of these patients had risk factors for heart disease before the vaccination, such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension or use of tobacco, Gerberding said.

The other two patients under investigation suffered from heart inflammation. Additionally, 10 people vaccinated through the military program had the same condition….The CDC planned to gather cardiac experts on Wednesday to consider whether something in the vaccine might be triggering heart problems in people who already have risk factors.

Health officials also plan to compare the rate of heart problems in the pool of smallpox vaccine recipients with the rate expected in a similar population of people who have not been vaccinated.

Under the new, temporary guidelines, people who have been diagnosed with serious heart disease such as coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, previous heart attack and angina are being told not to get the vaccine….”

Hi Kimberly- no more formatting worries! LOL~

Thanks for posting this- I read this in my newpaper this morning. I think the warning is a sound approach while they investigate this further.

Smallpox vaccine kills another,

"CDC officials said Thursday there was some evidence the smallpox vaccine has played a role in heart inflammation."

Ugh, this new format really stinks. You can't look at the message and replies in one glance, takes too long to scroll message by message.

I couldn't get that link to work, so here is the another link to the same story.

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/health/1840041

“A second health care worker has died of a heart attack after receiving the smallpox vaccine, and officials are investigating whether vaccinations are to blame for cardiac problems seen in 17 people who have been inoculated.

…CDC officials said Thursday there was some evidence the smallpox vaccine has played a role in heart inflammation. In New York state, officials halted the vaccinations altogether while the issue is sorted out.

Also Thursday, an expert panel advising the CDC raised questions about the vaccinations. …The second death came Wednesday. Virginia Jorgensen, 57, of St. Petersburg, Fla., suffered a heart attack about two weeks after being vaccinated against smallpox. “

Have you tried using the outline view yet Christine? I stretch mine out & anchor it to the top of my screen. There, I can scroll through the messages, and when I find one I want to read, and click it- it changes in the window beneath it.

LOL Kimberly~ if you DON'T complain a little I'm going to start feeling neglected! On the Moms boards, the changes are not going over well at all~ I like this format- it's a little more flexible. My only grip is not being able to display the messages together in their entirety.

OK, wouldn't want you to feel neglected; I positively HATE this new format! It is the WORST I've EVER tried to use! Change it IMMEDIATELY! Does that help?:)Get busy, girl! LOL!

I must say, I have been wondering if I am missing something, because it seems that there has not been much traffic/many new posts in the past few days. Ok, fess up; you moved the board and didn't tell me where it really is! This is just a "front board", lol!

Seriously, I have wondered about threads on the old board (which does not appear active) and how responding to one there works now. Just repost it and respond? (Not that I have come across any new I feel a need to respond to; just morbid curiosity;) But there are a few which are on-going.

I am going to try that format mentioned above, what was it called? Where you can see all the posts and click on one? I find that more flexible; being able to pre-view at least some of the message/messages in a thread to get an idea if you are interested, jmo.

Oh, to make this on topic, what do you think about that smallpox, huh? Pretty bad! And that vaccine! Starting to look sort of bad in its own right! ;)

LOL Kimberly, NOW I feel more at home! However, the new format's here to stay- iVillage had outgrown the previous software, Hypernews...

No, you're not missing anyhting- this IS the real board, LOL! All of the boards are experiencing slowdowns as a result of the new board changes. However, this is to be expected- a known phenomenon, so to speak. I am, however, glad to see you, Christine, Eve, Missy (hope I didn't miss anyone!) have stuck around, and I trust the other regulars will venture over to try out the water soon.

Now to address old posts- you can do one of two things, since, yes- they are read-only now.

•Link to the post in your starting post of the thread

•Cut & paste

•Or, probably the most helpful: do a combo. Cut & paste the pertinent remarks, and provide a link for dissection purposes, LOL.

Outline view- I found a new trick! When you open to this board, right-click on the link for Outline view- it will open up the board in folder view again. BUT, click outline view within that window view, and you will get a whole outline within a complete browser window!

Now, my comments on the small pox~ I still hold that the risks of the vaccine, at this point in time, outweigh the risks of disease for the general public. The newest developments suggest further investigation WRT the link to heart disease, and possibly ceasing the vaccine for first responders until the correlation is proved or disproved.

I read about the 3rd death today- a 55 yr old National Guardsman. They are talking about ruling the vaccine out for people over 50. I would at least do THAT until it is further investigated.

Have you heard anything about the newer version of the vaccine being made by Acambis, that uses a synthetic media culture as oppposed to the calf lymph type? There were hopes that it would effect less adverse events.

Me too, me too, I hate it, too!

I'm getting used to scrolling through the outline to find what I want to read, but it seemed so much simpler for me with the old format. I wonder why it was changed? I guess I'll get used to it -- I just hate adjusting to new things when I am comfortable with the old.

Just had to chime in . . .
