Infant dies after vaccination

Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: A 45-day-old infant is reported to have died 12 hours after being given a Diphtheria-Pertussis-Tetanus (DPT) vaccination shot at Poosaripatti near Manaparrai here on Wednesday.

According to sources, the baby developed fever after being administered the vaccine at the Primary Health Centre at Aniyapur. His parents, Pazhanisamy and Vijaya, reportedly gave the baby paracetamol tablets as prescribed by the doctor. The temperature came down initially, but shot up later again and the baby died at 9 p.m.

Deputy Director of Public Health Services V. Veerapandiyan ruled out the possibility of allergic reaction due to immunisation. P.R. Prabhu Elango, head, Department of Paediatrics, and K.A.P. Viswanathan of Government Medical College, Tiruchi, who examined the body, suspected asphyxiation during feeding. Doctors are awaiting the result of the post-mortem.

I am not sure what to take from this article. Vaccine, paracetamol, feeding? Other things that we might be unaware of?

Tend to agree, not really enough information.

So most likely not a vaccine issue, then :)

Do you think if this child were unvaccinated and contracted say, pertussis, and the same chain of events occured with the vaccine, that the death would be listed as a pertussis death (if it occurred in the US)?

I am not really sure what the answer to that is. I would like to think that if a child died of pertussis, or of a pertussis related complication (vaccinated or not), this would be duly noted. I would expect the same with a vaccine-related complication.

*Nothing* that I read in that article really suggests that the death was a vaccine-related death, only that it occurred *after* a vaccination. There is no suggestion the child died of high fever. I think I am just repeating my previous post, I'm sorry :)

>>In this instance, the vaccine was certainly part of the picture - do you agree?

You know, I am not really certain about that... Asphyxiation during eating (assuming this was correct, which I guess will be unknown until the results of the autopsy are in) seems unlikely to be related to the vaccine, or the fever, but who knows? Maybe the child was hungry and they fed him (or her, I don't remember...?) and he was so feverish he passed out and choked on the food... From personal experience, high fever does not cause for a high appetite... or they were trying to force-feed him? This sounds like a silly post, but I think that it reinforces our lack of knowledge with the events.

I agree that vaccines have adverse effects, but with this one - until we know for sure - it seems like we're clutching at straws :P
