New here w/? re: flu vax when preggo

Are there any moms on here who might have had the flu vaccine while pregnant? I am particularly curious about moms who did AND have children diagnosed with any form of autism or developmental delays.

It seems that while thimerosal has been banned from vaccinations in general, it is still allowed in the flu vax (both injectable and nasal.) Unless one specifically requests the thimerosal-free vax, the standard dose contains the mercury- based preservative. I cannot find much info regarding the impact of this on a developing fetus, but it troubles me a great deal. Considering that the byproducts, thus neurotoxicity, can linger for a year+, it seems that the fragile fetal system could take a very real hit during development in utero and beyond.

Any thoughts or are there any links to similar discussions/pertinent studies?

Thanks,
Roxane

Just for the record, the nasal form of the flu vaccine DOES NOT and never has contained thimerosal.

Thanks for your response, Judi.

I do not believe that vaccines, per se, are the cause of autism, but I am concerned by what I perceive as misleading information from physicians who usually don't have time to read through every study or even assess the availability of studies. I suppose that I agonize most about the cumulative effects of environmental neurotoxins, in particular. While I am no alarmist or conspiracy theorist, my career in healthcare has generated substantial cynicism about said topic and well-meaning practioners.

Gratefully,

No problem...I have no fear of vaccines, nor do I believe that vaccines

Roxane,

The flu mist doesn't have thimerosal, but I'm not sure they'll give that to you PG.

On the one hand, they want to treat pregnant women as if they are frail and unhealthy just because of their condition, which by the way, is not a sickness.

Then, on the otherhand -

They go AGAINST the insert that comes FROM the vaccine manufacturer and make pregnant women feel that it is absolutely necessary they get this vaccine.

Why?

Thank you so much for your input! ITA - which is why I will not be getting the flu vax, nasal or injectable. There is entirely too much at risk without ANY studies to reassure me to the contrary.

Yours is just the kind of situation I have been pondering.

Best

From the package insert ---

"Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with Fluzone vaccine. It is also not known if Fluzone vaccine can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant women or can affect reproduction capacity."

Does that make a person want to go out and get the flu shot? Gina, if you read that before your last post would you still assume it's safe and write the same post? It would terrify me to even think about getting that shot while pregnant - and that was prior to reading the insert. I've had the flu, and yes I agree that pregancy and flu would be horrible - but there's no way I would get a shot that hasn't even been tested during pregnancy, not even on animals, much less humans. But since I've gotten the flu every single time my husband got the vaccine, I wouldn't dare risk it, not even while not pregnant.

I wish every single women reading this would ask their OB/GYN or Midwife if they themselves have read the vaccine insert. I bet I could poll 500 OBGYN's RIGHT now and not a single one will say they have read that (assuming they are all honest)...yet they offer it up as a safe alternative to DYING from the flu. I didn't die when I got the flu - not even once out of the 5/6 times I got it, but to hear a doctor tell about the vaccine, oh you better get it or die one!
