OH School demands records, Please help!

We enrolled our 5 year old daughter in Kindergarden for the Fall. We live in Ohio, and the law states that we can submit a letter exempting her from immunizations for any of the common three reasons. I gave the filled out form to them, exempting her on philosophical and religious reasons - when we registered her.

It's been months, and I finally get this letter in the mail stating that Ohio Law mandates these immunizations, and they sent home a form with local clinics and told us to make her an appointment.

We follow homeopathy and have a homeopathic D.O. as our family doctor. I am livid that they are trying to bully us into getting her shots.

This is the PDF from Ohio's website. It looks like they can't deny her... but have included a loop hole that the school can discreetly deny her due to her posing a "threat" to other children.

I'm planning on getting another form from the doctors, signing that and going down to the school and handing it to them in person.

What do I do if they deny her? I cannot bring myself to get her immunized, and home schooling is not an option. Please help!

It always cracks me up when they tell non-vax families that if there is an outbreak "your kids can't come to school"! Heh~if there is an outbreak of lice I wouldn't want my children in school, thank you. Seriously. As if any rational person would want their kids there?

I think you handled it perfectly. I would have called, or stopped in and then if I really was getting that story, I would bring them a copy of the Ohio Revised Code. If that didn't work, I would ask an attorney to write a nice letter to the district.

Our kids are in public schools and we've never had a problem. Really, I think they just want their files complete and legal, I think the could really give a rat what you do.

Same here - just bare in mind, each disease will have different amount of days to be dismissed should there be an outbreak.

We have this in Ontario also but only when there is an outbreak of a VPD in the school.

This is the form we have to sign: http://vran.org/docs/form-2.pdf - you can see how it's worded there.

I was about to send you this link:

http://www.nvic.org/Vaccine-Laws/state-vaccine-requirements/ohio.aspx

Which had what the "law" is.

Everything sorted now?

It's just a matter of getting the records straight. If a parent doesn't vacc so the school doesn't have a vacc record for the child, then, an exemption form needs to be on file. More likely than not, it was just not in the right place and the lady assumed you were going to vax and they didn't have any such records of it. Then there are some that just plain don't know that vaxx's are not required. Sounds like in this case though the form was not placed in the right folder.

It's entirely possible. DH talked to her and said she was the nicest lady, and I really trust his opinion. When he was getting off the phone with her she said she was going to go look into it and call him back. WIthin 20 minutes she called him back and said she had gone down to the nurses office and found the form in her file. I guess forms trickle in, and they aren't all in one place yet... because they haven't even handed out the morning/afternoon school schedules yet.

Either way... if they were trying to bully us, they're not very good at it! LOL It all worked out, and it was a huge relief, because I was ready for a fight!

Thanks ladies!

I'm not saying I don't believe the school's story, but I bet you that many parents are bullied into vaccinating when they get that letter. They just hoped you were one of the parents who would be frightened by this and just give in. But then when they realize a parent won't back down, they pretend it was just an administrative error. I don't buy it and I'm betting it happens in schools across the country every day.

But at least you settled it and the results benefit you and your child, that's all that matters. :)

UPDATE: DH called and spoke with the principal this morning. All is well, and it appears there was a misunderstanding. Sounds like she may not have received the official form exempting her. But, she said she will look into her file, it's not a problem and she is definitely welcomed at the school.

*PHEW*

Thank you SO much for all your help!! You ladies are the best. ; )

Do I have your permission to copy your message and possibly include your contact info to an attorney familiar with vacc laws? This appears very gray and well worth challenging via lawsuit if your child is denied.
