Refusing to swab those with flu symptom

So, I there is a "virus" going around my kids' schools right now. My friend/neighbor's kids both are vomiting, fevers (102+)etc. Very flu like symptoms. I suggested she have her kids swabbed so she knows if it's H1N1 or not. "Oh nooooo," says the ped; "they don't appear flu like to me at all."
And they in essence refused to swab the kids. The conspiracist in me thinks by refusing to swab these kids, when the vaccine (eventually) becomes available they will push it on these poor kids that obviously had some sort of flu like virus, but no proof it was H1N1! Thus, shots all 'round....and not the good kind that comes with jello;)
My oldest has been coughing a bit the last few days, the minute it look flu like, off to get swabbed he goes. Then we will know he is done and fully antibodied.

approx 50% of the rapid flu test come back negative .. so if the test is done properly, a respiratory viral panel would have to be done to show influeza A .. or something else. Most of the time when the rapid flu comes back negative .. the RVP is postive -- go figure. The RVP takes several days to result. The resources this would consume would be monumental if they tested everyone who presented with a cough an a runny nose.
On the other side of that .. my DH has pneumonia last week and was coughing up blood. I didn't see it but he said "think raspberry jelly". Elijah has been coughing and is all congested. Then yesterday I woke up with body aches, chills a cough (def lower respiratory .. no stuffy nose) and a temp. I called and called today and it took me until 4 pm to get ahold of someone at the office -- and the nurse told me "drink lots of water and take tylenol for the fever." Clearly not listening to me when I said my DH had pneumonia and I'm concerned about my 8 mo old baby!! GR.
Our peds office has run the flu test on my son everytime we have taken him in with a fever since July. He's been tested THREE times!
Not sure if this is going to help or not but just wanted to share.
I work in an ER and we are told not to swab everyone that comes in with symptoms just those that are in high risks groups. Last year we ran out of the test strips .....many negative results. Which of course could be from an inadequate sample or that the pt truly is negative for the flu and has a different bug.
Really we do not do anything for "healthy" patients that do display symptoms other than comfort measures, tylenol/motrin, encourage fluids. most people do not even receive an IV for fluids...if the patients warrants IV fluids yes of course they get them but for the most part we do not.
Hope everyone stays healthy...

It's amazing how many people come in without taking anything at home... for themselves or more importantly to their kids.Brenda

Why are you reducing the fever?
Thanks for posting! Welcome to the board.
I have to wonder though, how healthy can a child be if he's had 38 vaccines before his immune system has even matured... I am assuming that most of the pediatric doctors don't consider that when deciding how healthy a baby is. I wish we had some sort of test to measure immune system health.

I used to do the Motrin/Tylenol dance...back to back every 4-6 hours. Then I learned to wait it out. There are safer ways to make your child more comfortable. I don't even keep the stuff in the house any more. I did bring my yarrow plant inside for the winter though!
