I know we usually discuss vaccines and children but I watched this video on the Today Show this morning and wanted to share.

Absolutely, it would be irresponsible not to.

1. I've never had the flu, and most people don't realize that the flu shot is not intended to prevent the stomach flu - it is intended to protect you or at least lessen the risk of complications if you were to get influenza A or H1N1. People think they have the "flu" when they get a stomach bug or a virus which causes flu-like symptoms, but the reality is that influenza A is QUITE serious and would most likely put you in the hospital if you were in a high-risk category such as being pregnant.

2. Yes - to protect myself and my child! Whooping cough is making a comeback because people are ignorantly not getting themselves a booster and not vaccinating their children.

3. Yes, as the vaccines protect against the 2 HPV types that cause most cervical cancer.

4. Yes, because I don't rely on OTHER PEOPLE to make sure they are protected against it. While I may not work with blood, etc... I do, just like everyone else, realize I may need to go to the hospital some day, or have surgery or be in an accident and come in contact with someone who has Hep B.

-Flu Shot : Nope. I've only had the flu shot twice; both times I had the flu afterwards; the only times I've ever had the flu. I'm not saying that the flu shot causes the flu. But since the virus mutates constantly, getting vaccinated is sort of a shot (pun not intended) in the dark.

-TDAP: The one of those that I am concerned about is pertusiss. I hate that they combine vaccines, though. However, if there happened to be a whopping cough outbreak in my community, I would seriously consider it. I'd at least get blood work done to see if I had the proper antibodies.

-HPV: No way. Under no circumstances will I be receiving the Gardasil vaccine. I do not trust it. I'm under 26, but only sexually active with my fiance - and we have only been sexually active with each other, ever. It is only for 4 strains of HPV - there are 15. I've heard way too much about possible side effects (before Michelle Bachmann went all crazy on it). And the unethical way that the company who makes the vaccine is pushing it scares me off.

-HepB: Again, I'm only sexually active with one person. I do not use drugs or share needles. I do not come in regular contact with other people's blood. I see no reason for me to receive this vaccine.

No, I personally would not get any of those.
