Vitamin K Injection?
| Mon, 11-09-2009 - 6:57pm |
Please help by sharing with me your knowledge, experience, & opinions. My baby is due in 3 weeks. I'm 42. I've decided, with no doubts, against the Hep B shot. However my Midwife & doula have told me to accept the Vitamin K shot because it's not worth the fight. I'm currently working on my Birth Plan & Vaccine Exemption Statement which needs to be notarized & submitted. I'm feeling overwhelmed by everything at this point. What should I do?
Thank you

We took the Vit K injection.
We also chose to circumcise our son, and the circumcision would not have been done if he had not received the Vit K injection, b/c of risk of bleeding.
We declined the Hep B vaccine, since he has no risk factors and it is completely unnecessary to vaccinate an infant that young against blood-born pathogens.
Here is a link to a Cochrane review of Vit K in neonates:

And if you have access to the AAP publications:

On the other side of it .. things to consider:

As it were .. my labor was an induction b/c of pre-e .. our son was born with a great deal of bruising on his head, and in so much pain from it that I had a very difficult time BFing during the first 24 hours after delivery b/c touching his head made him cry.. Vit K was a good option for us, given the head trauma he experienced as a result of my LONG induction (48+ hours) and the methods used to dilate my cervix, in addition to our choice to circumcise.
Hope this helps, and doesn't just complicate things more!

Oh, I absolutely knew you would. But since this is a debate board and someone asked for opinions, I'm entitled to mine. K? Thaaaaanks. Besides, she should be asking real life doctors. I don't know many people that would make decisions for the child based on what someone on the interwebz thought.
Lol couldn't you imagine "Well honey, I think we should circumcise our child because SuzieQ3000 on Yahoo did and she thought it was a good decision".
We did as we were "told" with my first two, and with my third dd I opted for it as Id researched more. The nurses were awesome about me refusing the Hep B, but I accepted the Vit K. I had researched it and discussed it with the nurse assigned to me and she was very supportive no matter what the decision on my part. The studies that connect pediatric leukemia and vit K have been discredited in other countries/studies.

I prefer the description "brutal honesty". But then again I'm the minority. I vaccinate. I'll probably edit my post, though, because I wasn't trying to sound mean to the OP.
eta: I actually won't edit my post. I wasn't being disrespectful and I even congratulated her on her pregnancy.
