I thought this was an interesting thought provoking article - I had never thought about the increase of immigrants in the US and how they are affecting the whole disease issue. ANother reason in my opinion to protect our kids!

What about the scare tactics that doctors use to get you to vaccinate?

if you look at larger outbreaks of VPDs like mumps, measles and rubella, in North America and Canada, you will find that they are imported in the middle classes through travel abroad. We just had that unvaccinated child from San Diego who travelled to Switzerland- certainly not a poor immigrant. Measles are also often imported through international adoptions (again not classical immigration), mumps got imported into colleges from England, rubella came to Canada through contact between religious communities in Canada and the Netherland. Immigration had nothing to do with it. When I am looking at outbreaks in the developed world, they tend to be propagated in people with higher education and who are relatively well off. The blanket statement about the 'cut vaccination programmes' falls short of the complex decisions and general political situations that led to changes in the vaccination programmes in the different countries. The situation in Russia for example was completely different from the situation in Japan. The vaccines that were affected are differnt ones, too.

That article does not do it for me.

What scare tactics are you talking about? Are you speaking of the FACTS that infants and children die from communicable diseases? That is the truth not care tactics in my opinion

When I took my twins to the urgent care center last week & as soon as I told them they weren't up to date on their vaccines the ped started on how they could get HIB & die.

Well...it could happen. It is a doctors job to inform you of the risks involved with not following through with vaxing. If they did not say anything, and something happened, they probably would feel pretty bad think about it. Some of them do have feelings and of course their job to be concerned about. I in no way consider that a scare tactic.

Lots of things could happen in the course of everyday life, but then again there are warning labels on just about everything

Immigrants must prove they are fully vaccinated (unless a civil surgeon rules that they are medically contraindicated for a particular vaccine) in order to obtain a green card, that's federal law.
