Why the denial?

"So even in death, she has not been granted the dignity of the truth of how she died."

Now you know why death by vaccine is "rare". Sadly, this story is only one of many.

Katie's Story,

http://www.vran.org/story/story_katie.asp

I am in the process of compiling exemption info by state for a new web page, for the US and other countries as I come across them, and while searching for info, I came across this story. It really sums up the denial associated with vaccine reactions.

I agree - why the denial? Although I think the denial may be on the part of the mother instead. The last time I checked, paralytic polio's hallmark is generalized flaccid paralysis - not focal as in this child's case (she had left sided paralysis which is indicative of an upper focal brain problem). Poliovirus attacks the anterior horn cells of the spinal cord resulting in motor paralysis and, rarely, ascends to involve the bulbar CNS. Bulbar paralysis from polio infection, to my understanding, generally involves the lower cranial nerves and brainstem - the ones that control breathing, etc - not the facial nerve (she had facial paralysis as well). The mother also seems to be a little confused regarding her reference to crying/"encephalitic scream". This is listed as an adverse reaction to DTP (the crying, not the "encephalitic scream"), not OPV. It's a shame that this child died but I think it's also a shame that this mother's need to assign blame has resulted in what appears to be a confused interpretation of the science behind polio and the OPV.

It is just so heartwrenching. All of these children who mysteriously die and nobody bothers or cares to help isolate the cause. So many children are permanently brain damaged and they are like sheep being led to the slaughter. So sad.

This is a very sad story.

Why is this being brought up? It was 20 years ago. We don't use live polio vaccines anymore, do we? Is the point being that you believe we are still endangering children's lives with vaccines?

I guess, like auto safety, we learn as the technology advances. Just because children were not buckled up 30 years ago doesn't mean we were "experimenting" on them. Then, as now, you have a choice to buckle up.

I don't know, this story, from 20 years ago, just struck me as being another very sad, very tragic thing that can happen. The vaccine was changed and that's good, right?

plus, the symptoms are not even consistent with polio, as Eve pointed out AND the plural of anecdote is not data (I think that is one of Eric's favorites).

Just goes to show you that babies have been dying "mysteriously" after being vaccinated for over 20 years, still dying today, yet vaccines are STILL denied as being the cause of death, or leading factor. This sad tale illustrates then and now, why we are told vaccine reactions are rare. When you deny the reactions of millions of children for decades, you will have highly inaccurate info. The tragedy continues.

But I DO believe that vax deaths are rare. Our media would be all over such a sensational story. Children dying mysteriously by the droves. Are you kidding? And especially they would be willing to expose something as powerful as the drug companies.

I think a child's death is very tragic, although I have not known anyone with a vax injured or killed child, but it certainly isn't the medical industry's "dirty little secret", IMO. There is no "conspiracy" to keep these deaths "quiet". But, and I am only trying to make a point here, if you so strongly believe there is, contact any of the major news networks and see if they will do an "expose" on vax inuries or deaths. It seems to me that the media you are working with does not have the power to expose such evil as well as, say, NBC, CBS or ABC could. And, the public is always looking for a reason to hate the drug industry, what with the high cost of rx's and such. My point being, if there was some sort of coverup, Dateline would have been all over it.

Several news stories have aired, maybe you missed them?

http://www.purehealthsystems.com/vaccine2.html

"Sent: Thursday, October 14, 1999 11:54 AM

Subject: OCTOBER 14, 1999: ABC NIGHTLINE ON VACCINES

Tonight the Nightline Show 11:30 p.m (ABC) will have a show on the

vaccine debate and why this issue will not go away. Dr. Jane Orient,

AAPS, and Dr. Sam Katz will be on the live segment with Dr. Tim Johnson

as the mediator."

"DATELINE WITH STONE PHILLIPS OCTOBER 20, 1999

Williams: "It's absolutely amazing."

At age 43, Montel's treating MS like any other mountain that's gotten in

his way. He's determined to move it. Looking back, Williams now believes

his first bout with MS happened in April 1980. The timing couldn't have

been worse. He was about to graduate from Annapolis, with his sight set

on becoming a Navy pilot.

Montel Williams: "Out of nowhere. Woke up one morning and I literally

looked in the mirror and could barely see myself."

Grace Williams: "They thought it was the shot, right."

Montel: "And they thought at the time, it was ... we had just had our

pre-commission physical vaccinations."

Stone Phillips: "Could have been an allergic reaction?"

Montel: "Could have been an allergic reaction. Boom - I got a body fever

and some kind of viral infection. This thing came on last for about a

month and a half and then went away."

Perhaps I missed it in your post, Christine, but how is it that this sad tale illustrates your point? You actually contend that VAPP is "inaccurately" described and, thus, this mother's account and conclusions might actually be accurate? Isn't that a bit of circular logic?
