Eating before c/section???

HI,
I have a scheduled c/section for 9/18. My due date is the 19th.I am not totally convinced this baby will wait that long.I have 7 children and I have never made it so close to a due date :)
I have been worrying lately about how things will go if I were to go into labor before the date.I know you are told not to eat or drink after midnight for a morning c/section.What if you have go into labor and you had eaten or drank something. How many hours do they like to wait to do the section? Being this is my the baby 2nd c/section my labors are pretty fast so chances I would have ate in 12 hrs are pretty good.
Just wondering if this is something they worry a lot about or just that they prefer you have not had anything to eat for a while.
thanks in advance this board has been so great for me :)

Hi Sherree -

You know, my understanding is that when they schedule C sections they do not want you to eat because IF you have to go under general anastetic you *could possibly* asperate stomach contents into your lungs. They mitigate this risk by limiting intake on those sections that are scheduled. However, of course there are tons of sections that are emergencies where Mom has eaten and there are no problems. If your baby decide that

Hey there Sherree :D

In most hospitals you will be required to wait anywhere between 4-6 hours after having a meal for your csection. You have 2 choices... lie lol! Or wait it out. The only real risk is asperation if they had to do general anesthesia from what I have read.

GL!

thanks for your responses :)
I feel better. I was worrying that this insomnia I have lately, that seems to come with eating at 3 am. might mess with my need to be prepared for anything.it seems the closer I get to this baby coming the more I feel the need to have everything in order :)

Mary, I cant believe you only have 3 more days...how exciting.

I hear you on the insomnia... I think I just lay there far more than I sleep at the moment.

I can't believe it's only a couple of days now either!! We are doing our last minute cleanups and prep this weekend. In one way I can't wait to get it over and on the other I just can't believe I'm having him lol!

Your's will be here before you know it too!

HI, I'm a nurse anesthetist and can tell you that they ask you not to eat the night before a scheduled C because of the chance you'll need general anesthesia.

Thanks for the info.

I'm also going into the hospital in the morning for my CS. I can't imagine going until 4 in the afternoon again! I had a bunch of emergencies move mine all the way out to like 3pm once, and it just blew. By that time you are starving, tired, and well.. in my case in need of caffiene in the worst way lol!

GL with yours, so counting up from 8 hours you should be ok eating really early that morning though!

Another reason not to eat... if you are sensitive to the anesthesia you will vomit the entire 20 minutes of the c-section.

I am totally fine with not eating the night before.
I am worried about if I were to go into labor before my planned c/s. My c/s is on the 18th and I am due on the 19th.In 7 pregnancies I have never made it past 39 weeks. My last normal labor was 5 hrs start to finish. So I was worried that if I had eating before I knew I was going to be in labor that it would be a bad thing.I just decided I cant worry about it. I just have to relax and let happen what happens.I sure don't want to vomit during the c/s.I am just hoping that if i do go into labor it will be in the morning ;)
