Gas Pains?

Hi!

I am not a regular poster but I do lurk everyday. I have a question. I was with a bunch of women last night and of course the conversation turned to childbirth. We were talking about c-sections and the biggest complaint that I heard was about the gas pains afterwards. I remember how awful they were. I got them so bad last time that they traveled up to my shoulder. Any tips on how to avoid this next time or how to relieve them? It's sad to say but this is the part that I dread the most!!!! I think that it hurt worse than the incision!

Thanks,

Becky

WALK!! I remember that the only thing that really worked was to walk around as much as possible and work it out of your system.

Hi Becky, yes, those gas pains are terrible! I've had 2 c/s's and when I was pregnant with my 2nd baby, the part I dreaded the most, was the gas pains! Mine also went up to my shoulders. Ugh, it was awful!!!! I don't know of any sure-fire way to avoid them, but what I did was buy me some liquid Mylanta BEFORE I went to the hospital (actually I had some because of morning sickness). As soon as I got home, I started drinking it & water. LOTS & LOTS & LOTS of water!!! I can't say that it helped alot, but my pains didn't last but about 5 hours. They started almost as soon as I walked in the door at home. Another thing is to move around as much as you can - even if you don't feel like it - try to!!!

Hope this helps you & good luck!!! - Lee Ann & Hannah (1/17/98) & Faith (7/18/02)

I agree-- they were horrible! I was given a pack of GasX tablets after my first section, but the nurse only told me they were *if* I had gas pains. Ugh!!!! By the time I realized gas pains were inevitable with a C/S, it was too late for the meds to help much.

With my second, I started taking the gas pills immediately. It prevented gas from getting painful. Also, do *not* drink from a straw. Avoid apple juice. And get up at the earliest possible time and walk. That helps get everything moving inside as well (I am sure it helped my recovery!).
