How Long Was Your Hospital Stay?

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Some women who deliver by cesarean section may be able to check out of the hospital the next day without raising their risk of problems, a small new study suggests.

The findings come from a clinical trial in Malaysia, where 360 women were randomly assigned to go home either one or two days after having a C-section. Both groups were equally satisfied with their care, and the women who were discharged sooner seemed to have no more problems with breastfeeding or mental well-being.

Those results, reported in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, don't mean that hospitals should start kicking women out the day after a C-section, researchers say.

Interesting!  How long was your hospital stay after you had your c-section?  Do you feel you were there too long? Too short? Just about the right amount of time?

Probably not relevant to this study. I went in on Thursday noon, got diagnosed with HELLP by 3 or 4 and had the baby by 5:30. Then I pushed to get out on Sunday, but my BP was still elevated.

For my c-section I had her at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, and went home around lunch time on Sunday.  They were willing to let me go home on Saturday, but I requested the full time in the hospital so that I could be sure I had a good head start to healing before going home to care for 4 kids.

One day seems insane to me. The first day, I could barely move and had just got off the morphine. I went home after three days with my first and four days with my second. I would not have left sooner in either case.

My first c-section was at 6:30pm on a Thursday, and I went home on Saturday. The second one was at 7:30AM on a Monday and I went home at 9:30 AM on a Wednesday. The next day I went shopping and the day after that my chronically ill sister had a stroke... glad I recuperated quickly and that I was out of the hospital so quickly.

My stay was three days with each of my guys.  I think that was about the right amount of time.  I felt strong enough to leave and was getting tired of being in the hospital!

No way would I go home after 1 day! I stayed in the hospital for 2 and a half- 3 days for my 3 C sections. This section is scheduled on a Monday, I expect to be home Wednesday afternoon. After my last section I was able to move around much better than the first.

I had my c-section at 5:30 pm on a Tuesday and was home at 3:00 pm the following Thursday. I felt well enough to leave the following day. My Dr. would rather a mother recover at home if she has a good support system b/c the chances of infection and contracting MRSA is greater while at the hospital.
