maternal cardiomyopathy?!

i delivered my DS by c-section on 30 nov. shortly after that i developed swellings all over my body and shortness of breath. i was told it all should go away by my 6 weeks pp appt. it did not. they ordered an echocardiogram and cardio appt. well, it seems i have developed maternal cardiomyopathy?!... third spacing of fluids after c-section?...i was put on diuretics, small dose as i breastfeed. it does not seem to work at all.

has anyone experienced this before? how long will the swellings stay? is there anything else i could do? maybe non-traditional? since traditional medicine does not seem to have the solution?

Me (33), DH (42), DS ( 13,5 months , born 6 weeks early)

welcome to the board, I am sure there are other moms who have had complication such as you described, however I have no experience with it. The only advice I have is don't let up on the doctors make them find a solution that will work for you and fix this complication.

I would also suggest you visit the negative birth experience board here on Ivillage, other moms may have had similar experiences and just not posted about it here on the c-section board.

I thought I had responded to you, but I see that it hasn't posted.

I wanted to say that I don't have any first hand experience, but I saw a news story on maternal cardiomyopathy the other day and it's really serious!! Are you being seen by a cardiologist? I would go back if the swelling isn't going down and make sure that they know what is going on.

I know that for there are foods that we eat that can inhibit diaretics -- don't drink soda, try to cut out all salt and drink lots of water to allow you to flush your system... but most importantly go back to your doctor and make sure that they know what is going on with you!

Good luck and please keep us posted on how you're doing.
