Question on Afterpains...

In reading birth stories, Afterpains were mentioned as being bad for some.

With my c/s, I was off morphine within 12 hours, and was only on ibuprofen after that. I was breastfeeding. I really do not remember any afterpains. I figured that my advil was taking care of them before I felt them, so I was curious how folks taking narcotics for the c/s pain could feel the pains badly. I know they are suppossed to get worse with every child, and this was my first, so maybe I escaped pain this time.

Anyway...I was just curious as to what other c/s moms' experiences have been with afterpains. Thanks!

I honestly have never heard any afterains theories, whether they were supposed to be worse or better. I don't believe there's any real blanket statement for how things are supposed to be, because people are SO different. Everyone's body chemistry is unique, so everyone's recovery will be different. Everyone here on the board could testify the afterpains were horrid with #2, but that doesn't mean you will even feel them, KWIM?

As for my own experience, I don't recall anything that was supposed to be 'afterpains'. I felt my uterus contracting as I was breastfeeding, and that was strong at times, but after my uterus settled down, I was okay :O)

The only pains I really remember where the "gas" pains.

I remember having some gas pains (nothing really bad), but not really much in the way of afterpains.

Word on the street is it gets worse with each child.

I had none with my 1st, with my 2nd, it was worse than the csection pain itself! It's contractions, and it HURTS! WSith my 3rd, I had them, but not quite as bad as the 2nd time. I breastfed and was given pitocin to stimulate the uterus to get it to shrink back down faster.

i just had my third c/s last friday and let me tell you - the afterpains were HORRIBLE!! they were really, really intense for me, it FELT like my cut and stitched up uterus was contracting hard (which it was). my l & d nurse told me it gets worse with each kid because your uterus has to work harder to get back down to size, since it's more and more stretched out.

i was also given pitocin, and also breastfed. the afterpains were worse than the c/s pain, and lasted about 3 days.

I was on a pitocin drip after i had my c-section,and i was also breastfeeding,so i had some fairly strong afterpains for a few days. They were worse that night after i had my c-section,but they gradually got less intense, only feeling like mild period cramps.I guess it's just that we are all different;some of us don't even get menstrual cramps, but others of us get awful ones,so it must be the same with afterpains.JMHO,Stephanie w/Vincent

It looks like the common denominator for strong afterpains is the use of pictocin, does anyone else see that in common in this thread?

I HATE the pictocin!!! I get it afterwards and when I nurse it is horrible! I must say that I didn't start noticing it until baby #3.

After my first baby (c/s), once they took the spinal out, that was it for me and pain meds- didn't take anything, including OTC stuff. I was also nursing. Don't remember any afterpains. After #2 (vaginal birth, no meds), the afterpains were *much* worse. After #3 (hbac, no pain meds), the afterpains were killer!! OMG, It was worse than labor- the cramping was so severe. I have also heard they get worse after each kid, and it was certainly true for me. (I nursed all three, btw)
