I am wondering if anyone else out there has had surgical equipment (i.e. sponges, whatever) left behind during a c-section?

Welcome to the board, and congrats on expecting again. WOW is what I have to say, I know that it can and does happen with any surgery but I I have to admit it never even crossed my mind that it could happen during my c-sections. I Hope it happens less now then years passed but who knows right. With the safeguards that are now in place for counting of surgical equipment and such pre and post op I would hope that it wouldn't happen again, but man something to think about for sure.

I am shocked that it took almost 4 years for them to find the sponge, that just blows me away, I would have thought you would have gone toxic within days or months at the most I guess your immune system was working over time to fight off the foreign body. Thank goodness you were obviously in good health or the outcome could have been so much worse. I hate to think of what would have happened if that were me in your shoes, I don't know what I would be feeling and thinking.

I am so glad to hear that your docs don't think this will have any lasting effect on your future pregnancy but wow I can't imagine what you would be thinking about during your next surgery. I think I would ad to my next birth plan that all surgical equipment must be accounted for before I am removed from the OR. Just to be sure that nothing is left behind.

Best of luck to you and definitely something for all future moms to think about.

Keep us posted and again welcome to the board, please make yourself at home and just holler if we can help in any way.

Well - that's something to think about, isn't it? How horrible. I'm sorry that happened to you -- it can be serious stuff and I'm so impressed that your body faught off the germs so well. You are impressive!!

I hope that things go well with your PG and with your upcoming section - Your doc is probably the best source of info on this -- but if you're not getting what you need, I'd consider seeking a second opinion if you are really concerned.

I hope you can find someone else who has had a similar experinece so that you can share stories....
