Hi girls,

I was wondering what is better, stitches or staples.

With first c/s I had stitched(sutures) because it was emergency c/s and they did not asked me and I did not know there are staples.

Now I am having baby in 13 days and I asked my doc what will he do and he said staples.

Last week I had docs appointment and his PA (physician assistant ) did the exam so I asked her what's better and she told me they all do want to do staples because its very fast and they want to get it over with but I should bug him about stitches because it's better - looks better, so now I have dilemma what to ask for? First scar is horrible, so now this will be second and I want one more baby after this so do I just get staples and than the last section ask for stitches or what should I do, any advice please????

Hey Bronia take it from experience STITCHES STITCHES STITCHES all the way! With our 4 yr old, and first child, I had staples and was in much more of considerable pain after than with our 3 yr old whom I had stitches for. It's almost like the stitches are 'flexible' and have some 'give' to them so that when you laugh, cough, sneeze, whatever, they are not as painful where as staples are so ridged and do not move what so ever! I really didn't care about scarring as much as comfort wise. Hope I have helped.

Bronia - Typically doctors will do stiches internally and externally they will do stapels. This is fine. If you can get them to do double stiches - that's good too... but the really important thing is that they do the two levels. It's often when they fail to close the incision internally (uterus) that there are complications with future C sections.

Good luck! 9 days!! Wow!!!

I have to agree, stitches. I have had both staples for the 1st and sutures for the 2nd and I was fortunate that I didn't have any infections with either, however it seem to me that so many women who have staples and they are NOT removed before leaving the hospital they wind up with infections. If the doctor does insist on doing staples with your 2nd c I would insist of pre op antibiotics to help ward off any infection post op. I would also insist on having the staples removed before leaving the hospital, this way less chance of infection after you leave. Talk it over to your doctor and bring up any concerns you may have. The last thing you want to do is get talked into something only because it's more convenient for the doctor and takes less time.

Keep us posted.

I've only had stiches so nothing to compare to, but my scar looks really good. I had internal stiches that just dissolved. I know with staples they have to be removed which seems to me like it'd be painful. I've seen staple scars and i think the stiches just look a little cleaner.

GOod luck...

I had my first c-section almost 6 months ago now. Like you I was unsure of what was the best. What my Dr. said heals the best is a combination of stitches and staples. I have nothing to compare it to but I have healed very well with no complications. They only left the staples in for a few days if I remember correctly and they left steri strips (like medical tape) on until they fell off. Which is good that the staples aren't in for long because they get VERY itchy!!!

I am a first time poster here- I will be having my second c-section at the end of April. My first was 'emergency' and I had staples- and I had a reaction to them. Doc said she had never seen anyone have a reaction to stainless steel staples before- but it didn't hurt or itch- it was just red and inflamed- the tape drove me NUTS though! I may ask for stitches this time- I wanted to thank you all for the info on stitches vs. staples :o)
