Is there a limit of c/s?

I had to have a c/s with my first. I am hoping to VBAC this time (no comments on that, please). But if I have to have another c/s, is there a limit on how many c/s are considered to be safe? What if you have that number and get pregnant again, what happens then? My DH and I want a big family with lots of kids and I am afraid that it might not happen now.

Thanks,

Kimberly

I think the "limit" really depeds on the body of the individual. Some women have higher risks with each c-section, and some heal easier and better. I really don't think there is a "true" limit, I think that your risk of uterine rupture increases with each c-section. Some of our Mommies here have had as many as 5 or more c-sections. If you get pregnant after your doctor has given you a limit, I don't think much will happen other than you will be closely watched for complications. After my second c-section, my OB told me my uterus was so healthy, I could have 3 more c-sections if I wanted. (I told her I would if she would pay to send the kids to college - LOL) I was actually surprised to hear that since I had to have the second c-section because of a complication with my first.

Best wishes to you - how ever it turns out!

Like Kelly said, the limit seems to be very individual and depends upon your body and how it heals and such. Here's a link to a poll posted about how many c/s people have had (if you haven't already seen it: http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=iv-ppcsection&msg=4786.1)

Having your first by c/s doesn't necessarily preclude a large family, from what I understand, but your risks with pregnancy and potential difficulties even getting pregnant do go up very slightly with each c/s you have. Good luck with your vbac plans- I'm due exactly a month before you :)
