Never got told not to. Didn't know I was having a baby when I went in (with the clothes on my back & NOTHING else). One poloroid from a kind nurse, then nothing for a couple more days. After that, I told a lot of people, "Don't worry about 'hospital bag'; the only thing indespensible is the camera."
2nd kid (VBAC) , I didn't want the nothing-to-the-imagination video. Some things are private. We got some movie clips (from the camera; not obviously video) after the baby was born.
