Some U.S. hospitals have a rate of cesarean deliveries 10 times higher than other hospitals, a new study finds.

Researchers analyzed data from 593 hospitals with at least 100 births in 2009 and found that cesarean rates at the hospitals ranged from 7.1 percent to 69.9 percent of births.

Cesarean delivery is a potentially lifesaving procedure in certain cases, and some differences in hospital rates would be expected based on patient differences, the University of Minnesota researchers said.

Interesting!  Have you checked out the c-section birth rate at the hospital where you will deliver?

Although my conception days are behind me, I thought I would see what the Cesarean rate is for the nearest hospital to me, since I do advocacy work for women. I couldn't find anything recent. I did find an interesting Powerpoint presentation of information for giving birth at the Rockyview in Calgary. Given that the hospital only has 2 beds available for surgical births, I think it's fairly low. I also cringed when I saw the recovery room for Cesarean sections. It's definitely not designed for comfort.
