I had my baby boy! (by c-sec)

I'm a little late with this announcement ... We had a baby boy on August 17 while we were on holidays for my sister's wedding. We went to the wedding on the Friday and then on Saturday morning at 5 AM my water broke! Yikes! I still had 3 weeks til my due date and my daughter was 2 weeks late so this was quite a surprise! So we went to the hospital and they said they would let me try the vbac if my ctx would start naturally, etc. The ctx did start right away but they weren't very regular ... but by 5 in the afternoon they were about 3 min apart. But then they slowed down again which was discouraging. So I went to sleep (they gave me a sleeping pill) and the next morning I was having ctx but not very regular. At around noon the OB came in and said he didn't like the readings on the monitor and wanted to do another c-sec ... I guess Brant wasn't moving enough for his liking. So we had the c-sec scheduled for 4:00 (because I had just eaten and they wanted my stomach to be empty) and Brant Nicholas was born at 4:30 pm. They found out the reason he wasn't moving much was because the cord was wrapped around his neck pretty good. Because he was early he had to be in the incubator for the first 3 days because his lungs weren't fully developed. Also, several hours after Brant was born the pediatrician came and told us that Brant has Down's Syndrome which was quite a shock for us as well! We had no clue during the pregnancy (no markers on the u/s) and DH and I are both only 27. But we've been learning lots about the Downs Syndrome and I think we'll be okay! It really helps that Brant is a really good baby ... he doesn't cry to much and when he does it's because he's hungry, he's been breastfeeding well, and he's a good pooper (apparently that's often a problem with children with Down's Syndrome). He does have a slight heart murmur and we have to go for an ECG on Nov 27 to make sure he doesn't have a hole in his heart ... but they already did x-rays on his heart and the shape and size look good ... so that's good news! He was 6lbs 4oz and 19 3/4" long when he was born.
Well I think that's it!

I read your post tonight and it gave me pause for thought. Thank you for sharing Brant's arrival, and welcome to him! I am sure that the world will be a brighter place because he is here.
I was just reading 'A Guide to Canadian Children's Books' by Deirdew Baker and Ken Setterington and came across two books with characters who have downs syndrome - apparently very good books.Perhaps they may be helpful to you and your family at some point. The first is called 'The Hangashore' by Geoff Butler (for ages 5-8), and the second 'How Smudge Came' (ages 4 and up) by Nan Gregory. 'A Guide to Canadian Children's Books' itself is a worthy read, FYI - lists many books with a synopsis on each, plus a great reference index by topic.
All the best to you and your family.
Warm regards,
Sandra
