Hi all my name is Karen. I have been away from Ivillage for a long time. I was part of the Aug 2006 board.  I am looking for some advise. My daughter is 7 now and no mater what her dad or I do she just will not listen. We have to tell her so many times to do something she will end up on her bed for not listening. She is having problems focusing in school and sleeping at night is just a nightmare. Last night was the first night in about a month that she slept all night. She will normally fall asleep in the chair with me then I will put her in her bed, then she is up in the night trying to get in bed with us. Most night she will go back to her bed. I am not sure if she sleep issues are causing her problems in school/ home.

Any words of advise? We are taking her to the DR. tomorrow. I don't want to put her on meds, so any suggestions?

Thank,

Karen

IF she has an emotional or psychiatric problem, and IF she needs meds, why would you refuse? Would you refuse meds if she was diabetic, or would you say, "let's try diet and behavior. If that doesn't work, and she develops gangrene, THEN we'll try meds." You might as well try voodoo. That would be equally effective.

I understand your thinking on this, but we as her parents feel that putting her on meds is not needed at this point. I never said we would not ever put her on meds, just that we didn't want to.. Her doctor said that she is not ADD or ADHD. What she need is coping tools to calm her self down on her own. We have an appt with a child physicist for this Friday. FYI...IF she were diabetic YES we would get and give her the meds that she needed for that and YES control it with diet. As my husband does with his diabetes. If we exhausted all options and voodoo was the last option YES I would try that too.
