I was thrilled to hear from my Dd that her apartment was spared of being flooded! She went to her place today, and phoned home (her father answered the phone) to say that no floodwater got into her basement apartment! This is amazing...so many places all around her place were flooded, but her house was just high enough - just situated on enough of elevation above all else there and above where the flood waters were able to penetrate, It's true that that aerial photo I mentioned about, which showed her house, did show how no water got into that area!
Now she doesn't have power, but eventually that will be restored. (I had asked her if she had much food in her fridge, and she said no...not sure if that means none whatsoever, or nothing much that could perish...probably the latter). Anyway she said she gathered up some clean clothing and was going to go and help a friend in the same area whose home was greatly affected by the flood.
Many many persons are helping people to clear out their flooded homes. The city asked for some volunteers to meet at a local football stadium and while they hoped 500 people would show up, the number of people who do did show up were more than twice that many. So they took 600 people today, and I think they asked the rest of those people who had come to volunteer to come back another day.
It is heartbreaking to see on the news so much of the mess and destroyed items that people have to clean up and dispose of due to the flood. Just awful.
