GOOD NEWS!

I was thrilled to hear from my Dd that her apartment was spared of being flooded!  She went to her place today, and phoned home (her father answered the phone) to say that no floodwater got into her basement apartment!  This is amazing...so many places all around her place were flooded, but her house was just high enough - just situated on enough of elevation above all else there and above where the flood waters were able to penetrate,  It's true that that aerial photo I mentioned about, which showed her house, did show how no water got into that area!

Now she doesn't have power, but eventually that will be restored.  (I had asked her if she had much food in her fridge, and she said no...not sure if that means none whatsoever, or nothing much that could perish...probably the latter).  Anyway she said she gathered up some clean clothing and was going to go and help a friend in the same area whose home was greatly affected by the flood.

Many many persons are helping people to clear out their flooded homes.  The city asked for some volunteers to meet at a local football stadium and while they hoped 500 people would show up, the number of people who do did show up were more than twice that many.  So they took 600 people today, and I think they asked the rest of those people who had come to volunteer to come back another day.

It is heartbreaking to see on the news so much of the mess and destroyed items that people have to clean up and dispose of due to the flood.  Just awful.

Great news on your dd! And so nice of her to help others - the pics looked devastating. We get annual flooding around here and just shake our heads at the people who choose to live in the flood plain areas, but I guess some have to.

My Dh found the photo online that was published in the Calgary Herald newspaper the other day which I'll include a link here to.  In the lower left  hand corner of the photo is a red roof which is the roof of the house my Dd lives in and you can see how there is no floodwater in that area.  I do wonder if the apartment buildings nearby were also spared.  Anyway you can also see the flood devastation of the other areas around and that's only a small part of the downtown areas that were affected.

That is great news! Sounds like your dd is feeling better too. Is there any estimate on when the power will be restored to her neighborhood?

Not sure about when the power will be back on.  They (whomever) are 'working on it' - but something about concerns re if water still remains in places that trying to turn the power on will  not be a good thing.  (I don't know how this works, but whatever).  There is so much news on the radio about the flood situation, the recovery part now, of course.  There's just so much news that it's a bit overwhelming to listen to it all the time.  So I guess we'll hear at some point about the power being on again.  I was hoping Christine would call home and let us know how things are going, but so far no call, and I assume she's quite busy if she's helping others.
