Labor Day weekend

Time for the last hurrah of summer! Although for some of us it will continue to feel like summer for a while longer.

Do you have any plans for the long weekend? Is there a nip of fall in the air where you are?

Do you get nostalgic at this time of year, like it feels like a new year....leftover feeling from school days?

There's no feeling of fall in the air at all, but leaves have been occasionally floating down for a couple of weeks where I live.  Still, it is as humid and muggy as summer in NY always is.

I am so looking forward to this weekend.  Everything has been so hectic in August:  getting everything ready for our vacation to Spain (which was amazing), getting DD ready for her first year of college, and last weekend actually moving her in.  This weekend there is plenty of time.  On Mon DH will take DS back to college, but I will be happily at home from Sat through Mon, pottering around, tidying things up (it's amazing how little is left once DD took her stuff), getting finances in order, thinking about fall clothes. . .

And also having talks with 21yo DS about what we expect from his senior year of college (beyond his usual stellar academics - as in, preparing to do something after graduation in 9 mos), 13yo DS about what we expect of him at his new, wonderful, heartbreakingly expensive private school, and DH about what he should expect of himself as the #1 facilitator of DS's success in said school.

But there is plenty of time for all those things, so I am feeling relaxed and happy about the weekend.

Heat index is 106 right now - not feelin' that fall at all! But yes, I get nostalgic - I LOVED school and the fall and the start of the new classes.

We've got a bunch of errands this weekend, and will have some of dh's family over on Sunday for pool/bbq - can't wait for the heat to break.

No plans,   DD3 is in Florida for the weekend but will probably get together with DD1 and DD2 one day.

No nip in the air we set a record of I think 105 (40)  yesterday.  Will be in the upper 90's -low  100s all weekend.

No nostalgia.  For me back to school just means a lot of work.

No nip in the air here, its hot and humid and isn't even cooling off overnight so no relief. Yesterday our bedroom was 93F/34C and cooled down by only a couple of degrees at night. I hate sleeping with a fan blowing on me but have to do it in these conditions. Nephew is still here in the guest room or else we probably would have slept in there with the AC running! (no AC in our upstairs) They say we might get some relief by Monday, I hope they're right.

We decided to make it a 4 day weekend, since dh is the boss he can make those executive decisions lol. We took the bikes to the island again on Friday (way too hot at the velodrome) and this time it was nice, a cool wind off of the water but not so windy as last week so not blowing sand. In the afternoon we went to Macys because they have a lot of men's clothes on sale, we replenished dh's business wardrobe for pretty cheap. But it took a couple of hours and I was too tired to even look at women's stuff.

I'm not sure yet what the plans are for the rest of the weekend. On Sunday our niece is coming here, she has an early flight on Monday from our airport so will stay over here and nephew will drive her to the airport, then have use of her car next week. No idea what time she will arrive. Her dad (dh's brother) may also come up in his own car, just for the day---no Labor Day in Mexico so he has to work on Monday. So I guess that Sunday will be spent hanging out with them unless their plans change.

Other than that, dh wants to bbq turkey burgers one night. With this heat the garden needs watering daily so that takes up part of my mornings. We won't be going back to the beach area, its traditionally very busy on this weekend and with the heat I'm sure its packed.

I used to get very nostalgic at this time of year but that seems to get less with every passing year. I do particularly like the quality of the light in the autumn as the angle of the sun changes. There's something kind of diffused about the light in the fall that I don't see in the spring. And I appreciate the longer shadows in the heat...because here fall is not a chilly season. My neighbor has a big sweet gum tree and so far no leaves are changing color yet, but I do love to see the fall color.

Today (Sunday) is being spent washing clothing from our trip.  I could also take the vacuum out to vacuum and there is a fine coating of dust on the surfaces of coffee tables, etc.   Our Ds, Eric, stayed here over the two weeks we were away and took care of the cat...though while he didn't make a mess of things, vacuuming and dusting weren't tasks he felt he had to do.  Which is fine - we are just so grateful that he is willing to come here to stay and take care of our aging feline.

I'm not sure if Eric will want to return tomorrow for a family dinner.  But we are inviting our children to supper should they so wish to be here.  I will have to phone or text them to see if they are planning to come since we've not been in contact with them very much during our time away or since we returned home yesterday evening.

Our weather is lovely this weekend...sunny and not too hot.  There is a suggestion of fall with a few leaves just turning colour but not much yet.  Since our children are grown and left home quite a number of  years ago, I don't miss the back-to-school preparation at all.
