So another week begins....

What's on everyone's agenda this week?  Busy and/or just the usual?  Somewhere I have to fit in time to go and get my eyes checked for a new prescription to get a new pair of glasses.  Something drastically went wrong with the coating on the surface of one lens of my glasses.  Some have said it could be due to high heat (like a blast of hot air from a hot oven) and I don't know if that is the reason for this (I was using an oven shortly before this happened but I wasn't aware of a hot blast of air, especially).  Anyway the left lens of my glasses have tiny cross- hatching on the lens surface, the coating having been affected this way.  Happily my right lens is okay and I can see out of that okay, but my it's a bit fuzzy looking out of my left lens.  (There is a tiny area in the center that seems less affected!).  I was due to get a new pair of glasse, not that there was any rush to do that in my mind, but now that this has happened, well, I am anxious to get a new pair soon!

And we are dealing with our cat Biggs, who is not doing well.  It's a long story, and we have yet to actually know what is ailing him.  He was off insulin on the order of the vet - this has been for almost two weeks, but since then he's not eating much and is losing weight.  He had been having incidents of low blood sugar prior to the past two weeks, which is why he was taken off the insulin.  We  had his blood sugar checked out this morning and his glucose reading was actually lower than what is normal for a cat.  (Cats should be somewhere around 7.0 but he's 5.5).  However, he's not been eating much and I do wonder if that has affected his reading.  Anyway he is old.  But we will return to see the vet this afternoon with him.  She was not in earlier this morning - an assistant drew his blood for the test. Our daughter was here yesterday - Biggs is kind of 'her' cat - she was the one who so desperately wanted a pet, and so we got him 14 years ago from a family who was giving him up - he was three years old at the time.  She is distressed to know he is ill and the prospect of losing him possibly soon is upsetting her.  As I am upset too, but not to the extent she is.

I can't think of much else on my agenda for the week though I'm sure I'll be busy enough nevertheless.  I am actually feeling some pains in my shoulders and hip area and my knees aren't feeling so hot either so I won't be dashing about anyway no matter what I do.  I actually recently applied for and got a handicap parking card thanks to my rheumatologist who filled in the appropriate form for me to go and get this.  It's temporary - well, for 12 months.  Somewhere within maybe the next 12 months (?) I may get to having knee surgery to replace these knees of mine.  I'm still waiting to hear from the surgeon's office for an appointment.  So I don't yet know when I might have the surgery.

Anyway that's the news as of late with me.  How is everyone else doing here?

Good luck with the glasses - sounds like some odd crazing.  I don't do coatings on mine; they usually scratch worse with coatings than without (plus mine are only for at night as I wear my 'coke bottle' contacts all day).

Poor Biggs. The 2 cats we had that became diabetic only made it a year or so after diagnosis, which put them at 14-14.5 when they passed/we had them put down.  Very sad but they too were having issues that just couldn't resolve. Hugs to your dd.

Back to work here; nothing major/out of the ordinary.  On the 18th we go back to Wisconsin for a long weekend of racing, and then on the 26th we go to Michigan for a week for vacation/some repairs to dh's brother's place.   So looking forward to all of that.  No other family gatherings the rest of the month (whew!) so hopefully a bit more low key for a bit.

Nothing eventful this week which is good after last week'

I woke up with a stomach bug on the 4th so spent most of the weekend on the couch.  Still not feeling up to par today but did go to work.  Thankfully my sub did a good job of keeping up so I did not have a lot of catching up to do and actually was able to only work a  6 hour day, very rare after returning from 2 days off.     The rest of the work should be fairly easy at work.

We had planned on seeing the new Transformer movie over the weekend but did not make it, will probably do that this week or weekend.

It will be pretty much the usual here. So far the only extra thing is going out for dinner on Thursday night. Its a friend's birthday so 3 couples are getting together at a restaurant.

Last week my exercise schedule got messed up so I'm trying to get back on track. I swam today and should swim again on Friday, and bike on Wednesday. Depending on how my back feels I may try to add some  more...there's an Aqua Zumba class on Tues mornings and regular Zumba on Thurs morning.

I finally caved in and turned on the AC for a while today, but have already turned it off. After it ran for about 30 minutes I started noticing a musty moldy kind of odor and got a terrible headache. I fired off an email to the HVAC guy, we're due for a routine maintanence anyway. I hope its something simple to resolve.

I'm hoping to get another 6-pak of cucumber starts and get them in the ground, and then I think I will be done with planting for the summer garden. I need dh to help me put up a horizontal trellis for the cukes, and there's always fertilizing, watering, weeding, mulching etc so I'm staying busy outside.

FIL's birthday bash was cancelled mainly because some of the family has other commitments for that weekend. We will probably go to the desert on his bday to see him and take them out to lunch. Its miserably hot over there now but what can you do.

Shirley, so sorry to hear that Biggs is having problems again. I hope the vet can get him stabilized.

Tomorrow, we are off to the bridal shop.  Rae's dress is in, and she wants Lolo & I to go with her, to see the dress and help her with the fit.  Also, she wants Lolo to look at bridesmaids dresses, even tho Lolo is a beached whale, and is NOT happy about dress shopping.  This will also entail Ed watching Aubrey AND Layla.  He is home by 3, & our appt is for 5.  The earliest Anthony can be here is 7pm, & Will works till 9:30 at least, so Ed was our go-to.  We'll see if he survives!

Wednesday, I'm taking my SIL to yet another drs appt.  She is 72, and has a multitude of health issues.  Her sister now lives out of state, her stepson from her first marriage works during the day, and otherwise, she just has a cousin older than her.  She gets upset and forgets what to ask, and what they said, so someone needs to be there with her.  Rachel lives close to my SIL, and she has been watching Aubrey while I make these rounds, so I don't have to try to control her for hours in a hopital or drs office.

Thursday is supposed to be our one relativly cooler day --only mid to upper 70's--so if that happens, I will put up the wading pool to keep Aubrey occupied while I weed and maintain.

Friday is still up in the air, but if it's not Africa hot like today was, we might go to the zoo.

And sometime this week, we will watch Bree while Will and Lolo attend a funeral.  Will's sister's MIL & FIL were both killed on the 4th, when kids drag racing lost control of the car, crossed into oncoming traffic, and hit them head-on.  They, and their 13 yo son, who was the only one to survive from both cars, were 10 minutes away from a family BBQ.  Neighbors were able to get the boy out of the backseat of the pick-up the family was driving, because it was literally cut in two, and he was just hanging in the back half, in his seatbelt.  It took police and firemen an hour to get the parents' bodies out, and another 4 hours to reconstruct the accident and clean the scene, causing a massive traffic jam, and making the 10pm news.

They say when your time's up, it's up, but we never really believe things like this will happen to "us".  Talk to your family, bury hatchets, don't let time go by without saying "I love you".  You truly never know, when they walk out the door, if you'll ever see them again.

Oh Sabr-how horrible for Will's sister. Who will be responsible for the surviving 13yr old boy now?

Our week will be (has been?)fairly quiet. No-the house is not sold-but I've been hearing that houses in the country are beginning to sell now. The housing market is saturated at the moment-so I sit here, waiting. It is unusual in that it has waterfront-but that feature is far enough from the house that a couple looking for it thinks it is too far away, & a family looking for a rural home thinks "Waterfront? With these kids? No Way!" To me-the 1000+ft is a safety factor-though maybe others don't worry as much as I do?

Yesterday, after much discussion with her & with my co-"Power of Care" & with our family dr-we got Mom's Living Will settled. Mom gave PofA to 2 of my brothers-one of whom automatically counters whatever anyone else says-in today's world he'd be considered ODD, we just call him obnoxious & bossy. But Liz & I have PofC & it was very important I got everything written down before we moved. John's wife is an RN-unfortunately she flashes that around so much she's alienated the staff at Mom's residence-they hate talking to her. Now everything is written & Mom is happy with what is there. I told I'd come home when she gets sick-but in the meantime her wishes will be met.

We sold Adam's Mule last evening-so sad because he loved that machine. It gave him freedom & made him feel special. The lady who bought it promised to care for it (even better-she said she'd leave his name on it). She thought it was so funny that Adam was happy to teach his niece to drive it-but would not allow me to. (I said but I drive you all over town in the car or van "That's fine Mom-but I don't trust you with my Mule") I respected his wishes until he died-then I drove it everywhere! But we plan to move to town-& it isn't a legal vehicle in town. <sigh>

So mostly this is a week of this & that-tidying up & doing odds & ends. Windows that normally get cleaned twice a year, got done an extra time on the weekend. Spiders webs that are usually left alone until Fall got brushed aside outside-they don't hurt anyone or anything-but they look gross to some. I'm knitting some & weeding some & that's about it. Nothing exciting-I'm well without any complaints except about a couple of Pugs who drive me crazy or a few cats who seem to shed fur everywhere or bring up fur-balls in odd places.

If my house would sell-I'd even go so far as to say "Life is Good"...& it will be when...!

Sabr, sorry to hear about your extended famiy's loss. I feel for that 13 year old boy. What a horrible memory to carry!

Quiet week as usual.

I had an appointment with my GP and now have a series of blood work and other stuff to do; just the usual after a certain age. Other than that and dog grooming appointment, nothing planned. It is getting too hot here to be out during the day; my gardening has to wait till late in the day.

We are taking a break from house renovations till the fall and then we will start on the the kitchen. The cabinets have been ordered, kitchen layout has been done... It's going to be very clean but I am not looking forward to living in chaos for the length of time it will take to do the work.

So sad for that 13 year old- definitely know that area.

Forgot to mention we're going to have most of our wooden floors refinished while on vacation in a few weeks - NOT looking forwrad to moving everything out of the way but hoping they look better when we return.

Sabr, what a shame about the 13yo boy losing his parents in such a tragic way.

Sue and Marie, I don't envy you on the renovations! We had both of those projects done in 2009---complete kitchen remodel (down to the studs) and some of the wood floors refinished. Besides the noise, it was the dust that drove me crazy. Even with containment it managed to get everywhere. So good that you will be out of town during the job Sue. The odor of the new finish was pretty strong for a day or two also even with doors and windows open. Is your ds going on vacation with you? What about the cats?

Nora, crossing my fingers that you get a buyer soon. It must be frustrating to be psychologically ready to move but not able to. Do you have to keep the house ready for a showing at all times?

We have a ranch house, with a partially finished basement.  The kitchen leads to the basement and has stairs to the outside/back yard. It has pocket doors that close it off from the rest of the house (tile floors in the kitchen; not redoing those; redid those in '99 when we moved in and there was indoor/outdoor carpeting in there)  DH's sister and partner will come by to look in on the kitties a couple of times during the week, so they'll just come in the kitchen and go downstairs with the kitties who will be sequestered from the noise and hopefully from most of the dust and smell. We leave on a Saturday and come back the following Sunday; the workers will be there M-F. Would probably do the same thing with the kitties next year as not the easiest to just close off where the bedrooms are, keeping them out. Doable but not as easy. (Yes, ds is going with us)

That is such awful news about the deaths of Will's sister's MIL and FIL.  How tragic - how awful for the young man who survived who will have such grief and trauma to deal with.  I hope he will be okay in time.
