The weekend approaches...

How will you be spending it? Are you getting stormy weather? Sue, did you get a lot of rain? I hope that Sabr didn't have any flood problems.

I have the electrician and his helper here again this weekend, since 7am this morning. Already I could cry. He's had to make holes in the kitchen wall to grab wires that need to be replaced, and may need to make more holes in other rooms. The holes are approx. 4.5 inches in diameter, just large enough to get his fist in there. I just sent a reminder email to the plaster guy that I will need his services soon. Today they will be working in most of the downstairs rooms so disruption everywhere. They've found some surprises and difficulties, which is to be expected in old homes, so work will probably move more slowly today than hoped. I had planned to get out on my bike this morning but the rewiring work in the bathroom (the one with the shower, the upstairs has just a powder room) will be such that I probably cannot use it to shower so I'm skipping the ride.

The bright spot is the weather, its beautiful here. Sunny and clear and warm to hot, but very low humidity. Yesterday got to 80F and today should be a rerun, then cooling down a bit on Sat and Sun but still very nice. (too bad for the electrician who will be in the attic where it will get very hot).

The home improvement job pretty much defines my weekend, I am sorry to say....I don't think I can even do much deskwork today because he will be working in my office later.

I'm sure that everybody else will have a better weekend than I will---cheer me up by telling me what you are to!

Well, we just had a very nice visit with a (nursing)classmate of mine & her partner. They worked very hard to keep things quiet but Adam knows Kathy & Gord & always has so much to say to them. And unfortunately, he can become hypoxic from talking and/or laughing too much. They could hear us up at night with Adam, so decided to not extend their visit any longer (originally it was to be Tuesday-Thursday, then they decided to stay until Saturday). They left this morning-& he has spent the day in bed-trying to recuperate from having fun! How sad is that?

Our weather is warm, but wet. But I just heard a forecast for tomorrow that seemed to have the 4-letter word in it-you know the one beginning with "S" & ending in "NOW"?. I surely do hope not_I have plans to begin working in the garden tomorrow-or maybe not!

elc - wishing you luck with renovation woes.  Learning about this stuff in real estate class.  So getting an idea of what you are dealing with.  As for my weekend plans - food shopping, studying & chilling.  Spoke to ds who is on lockdown in Cambridge.  Forced to stay home from work today, watching the news & bored.  Also he doesn't cook much - meaning he doesn't have enough food in the refrigerator & because he's on lockdown, can't go food shopping.  Basically, he can't wait till Boston police catch the suspect so he can resume his life.  I told him to think of his trip to Australia - something positive to look forward to.  He told me he has to get thru this Boston thing 1st.  As a Mom, I'm thankful that he's safe, but I feel for him & all the residents of Boston that they are dealing with a nightmare & praying that this ends quickly.

Sorry for all the electrical work, it is messy & really restricts your movements. Old houses are lovely but they need continuous upkeep. Do you have knob & tube wiring that you are replacing? We had it in one place. Had a terrible time getting it insured. After we moved in, we found out that they had replaced the wiring but never made a final payment so the electrician didn't file some papers with the hydro. We paid & got the new wiring hooked up to the hydro company. I'm doing more housecleaning tonight. Tomorrow I will head into DD's to pick up DS1 after DGS's birthday party. It will be nice to have DS1 home for a few days. Heard today that DS & his fiancée are heading up on Sun night for a couple of days. So it will be a full house. I have to get my sewing room (double bed) cleaned up so DS1 has a place to stay since his brother will be taking over the guest room (queen bed). I hope to just relax & spend time outside on Sun but not counting on it because as Nora mentioned we are expected to get that horrible white stuff tonight & over the weekend. Can't believe it was in the low 70s yesterday afternoon. Dee

Kathy, I've been thinking about your ds as I follow the saga of first the bombings, and then today the manhunt. I just read that they captured the second guy so hopefully things will start to return to normal for your ds. What a stressful week this must have been for the residents of Boston and surrounding area.

Dee, yes we are replacing knob and tube wiring. Our walls are lath and plaster except for the kitchen and my office, which had the plaster torn out when we did some remodeling in 2009, so those rooms have drywall. However my office still had old wiring--and he needed to make a hole in a wall there. Drywall may actually make more of a mess than plaster, the finer particles get everywhere. And I thought my house was a mess last week! At least they are done in my office so I hopefully I can shut the door for some peace in her over the weekend.

How nice that you will get some time with ds1, and with ds2 and Syd too. I've been wanting to ask about dd and the pregnancy but I'm rather superstitious about some things and don't want to tempt the fates! Crossing my fingers that everything continues well for her until at least week 38.

Well, I don't have repairs going on in the house but I can't say my weekend will be all that interesting.  Ray is actually going to be away the two days at least in the daytime hours.  The "Super Train" show is on and Ray's model train club has a booth there as they do every year and Ray will be going to help out at the booth.  Chances are, at least for some of the time, he'll be driving the little ride on train they brought to this exhibition show!  The public gets to ride on it free (donations accepted, I suppose).

I'm not planning to do much - unfortunately my knees are still painful - so walking except around the house, is out of the question.  I did walk yesterday to do some shopping at Costco.  I can manage to an extent but I have to be careful not to overdo it that way.  I do have an appointment with my rheumatologist on Monday - so hopefully he'll have some idea of why I have this pain, or more importantly too, what to do about it!

Our weather isn't going to be so nice this weekend.  Predicted are flurries or maybe mixed precipitation (meaning snow and rain)...but so far it's not doing either...I guess the clouds are going to move in sometime soon.  However, it's not like we are going to get much snow.  In fact it will probably be gone before you know it.

I'm not even sure I will  have my kids come to dinner on Sunday (dd probably can't come anyway).  Ray will be home later on Sunday as he'll be helping to take down the club's booth and to load the stuff into their transport trailer.  I'm going to have to think about whether I want them to come if Ray will be coming home a bit later and maybe supper will be delayed.  I'll have to think about it.

I hope your home repairs get done quickly and your life can get back to normal!  I agree about old houses being lovely, but also alot of upkeep.

As for this weekend, I did my favorite thing this morning...sleep IN!  I get up at 6:00 every morning for work and am not a morning person by nature, so it's always a treat when I can do that.  :)  I already have laundry going and am enjoying my quiet time on my computer with my coffee.

Dh and I might go on a road trip this weekend.  He's been home for 6 weeks on short term disability trying to get his chronic pain under control.  He's been through 3 procedures and his pain doctor changed one of his major meds.  It didn't work...only made him feel lethargic and achy all over...shortness of breath, etc..He saw his doctor on Wednesday and said he needed to figure it out because he has to go back to work in 2 weeks and he couldn't do that feeling so horrible.  So, his doctor changed him back to his old med and yesterday, he felt more like his old self than he has in over a month.  Apparently, the new med had very adverse effects on him.  So, yesterday was the first day we have had hope that our lives might get back to normal.  Anyway, it was nice to see him feeling better and now he wants to start living again.  We'll just take a 2 hour drive and stay at motel somewhere, go for a walk and grill steaks outside the motel.  We call it "motel camping".  It's only going to be 50 here today, but that's warm compared to what it's been...AND the sun is shining!  Woo hoo!  I love the sun and haven't seen it in so long.

I can't help but think if things had been different, I'd be in Chicago having a girls' weekend with DD21 and DD29, but neither mentioned it to me.  I haven't seen DD29 since August and really miss her, but guess she doesn't feel the same.  So...life goes on...
