Has anybody done anything exciting? Any plans for the weekend? Is it hot where you are, or really hot? It is August so I guess that's to be expected *sigh*.

Tell us what you're up to.

Nothing exciting here, I'm afraid. But nothing bad either, so that's good.

We went out to dinner with some old friends the other night. They live in a different part of the county, much more suburban than where we live. The restaurant was in a shopping center and had a large outdoor dining area. Where we are, those restaurants with outdoor seating tend to have pretty small areas for it, sometimes its only along the sidewalk with a lot of traffic noise. We commented on how there were no homeless people hanging around there either, they are a staple where we live. So near, yet so far away!

On Friday morning dh and I took the bikes out to "the island" and got a really good workout. It was really windy so that added to the exertion...also sandblasted us with blowing sand. I was covered in grit because the sand and dirt stuck to the sunscreen--yuck. The bikes also got sandy so today my wonderful dh is cleaning them.

Nephew is still here but we don't see too much of him. Since he uses the bus for transport he leaves early and gets back late. Plus he has some friends living here in addition to the ones he's met at the hospital so much of his free time is spent socializing. His wife is 4.5 months pregnant and just learned, through ultrasound, that there's 90% chance its a boy so nephew is delighted (they already have a girl). When he is here we hear tales of the hospital which are pretty interesting from the outsider doctor's POV.

My ds got back from Italy on Wednesday, sent a text to let us know they had arrived home. Hopefully we can talk to him this weekend to hear about his adventures.

Our weather is not too hot but is somewhat humid, and supposed to get muggier. There's a hurricane off of BC Mex that will send moisture here by Sunday with a chance of thunderstorms. If it has to be muggy then hopefully it will be cloudy to keep the temperature down.

We might go to a museum this weekend, just for something different to do. Either the Natural History or Art, we're members of both so get in for "free". Whether we can find parking at the Park will likely be the question, although I heard a news anchor saying that lots of tourists have already left because school has started in many places. IMO things don't really clear out until mid-September.

That's my update.

My sister and her family were here Wed night to Fri morning.  Did family dinners both nights and went to a museum during the day on Thurs.

It is hot although today we are only supppsed to be in the mid 90's  (35) rather then the low 100's  (39) we usually are this time of year.

Going to a ball game tonight.  The second to last home game of the year.   The last Sat night game is always Shirt Off Their Back Night.  They raffle off their shirts to raise funds for charity.  Tonights charity is Autism Speaks.

Nothing exciting here. Volunteered at ds's U for parent orientation this morning for an hour, then went to an Omnimax movie on mummies and had lunch with a friend.  Now home watching a movie before dh gets home; also doing laundry. Had pizza last night with dh and made oatmeal raisin cookies. Might go to the zoo tomorrow so dh can see the new sea lion area - but it's to be beastly hot, as it is now - going steadily up to 97 Thursday; usually hot in STL til about late Sept/early Oct. That's what I dislike the most about living here!

The kids were all over yesterday.  We ordered pizza in.  The boys watched the football game (preseason-- GreenBay, till the Bears started) while us girls played with the Roku Dh got us for the bedroom.  It has Angry Birds, and we were playing that.  Aubrey likes to watch with Poppa, saying "Wheee, OH Poppa, Too bad, and Oh-Oh!!!"  Her vocab has really taken off, with the phrases surprising us.  Yesterday, she tood on the deck and called the dog, SCREAMING, "Cmon Ozzie!!!"  Today Lauren, Aubrey & I were at the zoo, and Aubrey was watching the giraffes when she said "All tall!" (We read Hop on Pop) and "What doing?"

And so we're at the zoo, and cell reception is poor to begin with, plus we were in several underground viewing areas (seal, polar bear, dolphins) and then we walked out into the open and suddenly BOTH Lauren and my phones are ringing, ringing, and beeping with messages.  We each had SIX messages, and as many missed calls.  We checked the messages, and one is a photo of Rae and Anthony's hands, and a ring on Rae's finger!!!

Turns out Dh KNEW, and didn't tell me!!  Anthony had asked Ed, and explained how he was going to propose, at the Morton Arboretum, where they will probably also have the wedding.  Ed said, "I don't own her" but he appreciated the gesture.  The wedding will be next fall.  They are coming over later tonight, to show us the rings.

So that's been my excitment.  Oh, and Bree's other Grandma is trying to get a little food cart business off the ground, so she cannot watch Bree anymore.  End result-- I am offically retired from work.  It was only about 12 hours a week, and we didn't NEED the money, so that's not a problem.

Congratulations Sabr-a wedding in your future!

We are fast approaching Fall here-leaves are turning colour already, the nights are getting cooler & all the ads are "Back to School"! I like Fall-it is a beautiful time of year-but I do NOT like what comes next-brrrrr!

For excitement-not much. We are going to visit Karen, leaving on Thursday. I told her I do not want to be here for Adam's Birthdate (31st). Everything is too fresh yet-I had a terrible day this week, not only was the 21st the 4mo anniversary of his death, but it was the 26yr anniversary of the day he joined our family. I spent a good part of the day in tears-remembering the little boy who at the age of almost 3 who could not walk, talk or eat-& how much he contributed to our lives, how much love he shared with all of us. He learned so much in his too short life-but he also taught us so much.

When we visit Karen, we'll go see Mike's sister in the same city. She is not well plus she has never learned to drive a car, so can't come to see us easily.

Other than that-I bike about every other day (not as far or as fast as Elspeth & her dh). Tonight we took my paddle-boat out on the lake for a ride, which is a workout too. And I do the usual knitting & sewing & reading-gardening & soon will expand to do woodsplitting & stacking (nobody trusts me with a chain saw-can't imagine why? possibly due to my natural born klutziness?) I will begin to volunteer again on September 10-it did me good to get the summer off, but I do miss "MY" ladies.

Today is my DD's birthday. The kids are going to be here for dinner, bringing friends with them. Friends may also drop by. It is going to be a very busy day.

Congrats Sabr on the upcoming wedding.

Nora, Marie, thank you.  The wedding will be early next fall.  The venue they have been discussing is beautiful, but EXTREMELY expensive.  I have told Rae that we are LITERALLY only a few years from retirment, I am no longer working, and they, together, are making MORE than Dh & I were making together, even before I retired.  We paid for Lolo's wedding, but Lolo was only 22, and just starting out.  However, we paid for Rae's university, which took 5.5 years, as opposed to 3 years of CC for Lolo.

Up to this point, Rae has always said she wanted a small wedding, just immediate family, preferably outdoors.  Even our first generation family is very SMALL.  Dh & I were both surprises to our families. The only survivor of our aunts & uncles (out of 20!!!) is 96 and in a nursing home.  There are only a few remaining first cousins, and the 2 who live in the same STATE as we do, are in their 70's.

Anthony however, wants a big wedding.  His friends are spread across half the nation.  His family is immense.  Plus, he has 3 of them!  His mom's, his dad's and his step-dad's.  He is close to his step-dad; his mom remarried when Anthony was 3, his sister was 4, and added a half-brother a couple years later.  And Anthony's bio-dad wasn't a bad guy--just a big kid himself.  A perpetual dreamer who could not buckle down and support a family.  And HE remarried, and got divorced again, but not before producing a half-sister.  And EVERYBODY came from the Chicago 'burbs, same general areas, everybody gets along with everybody and it's a convention when they all get together.

So, altho we like Anthony, we do NOT want to pay for a huge party where there will only be a handfull of ... "us".

I do not think the girls parse every penny we spend on them, to make sure it's even, and just the other day, Rae's fiancee was griping about a wedding they have been invited to-- that now they were also being invited to the shower, and he said, "These people are in their mid 30's, have dam good jobs, and have a house full of everything since they've been living together for 3 years!  And they expect MORE???"  He CAN be a little cheap.  I don't think he would hold a grudge if we don't pay for their wedding...but you never know.

My head also tells me we will be spending money on grandchildren (which they intend to begin trying for immediatly after the wedding), but I STILL can't help wondering if we should pony up enough to cover our side of the family...

Congrats!  I'd say maybe just give them a check before the wedding and say it's for whatever - if they want it to cover your side, that's fine; if they want it to go toward their honeymoon - up to them.  That way it's a flat amount and not specified so they wouldn't feel funny if they chose to use it for something different, and you wouldn't have to worry about what should it cost to pay for your side, etc.  Just a thought.  I haven't been to the arboretum in years but I do remember it being lovely!

Weddings can be expensive, even small ones. My nephew is getting married in about a month. It is a small event (both sides are not very large), they are doing things very simply but even that is costly. They, the couple, are paying for it with a bit of help from the families. No wedding gifts, only contributions towards their honeymoon.

I kinda understand your future son-in-law's complaint. Wedding gifts were traditioanlly to help the young couple start their lives together. But so many these days have already set up homes and have lived together for several years.  How many food proccessors can anyone use!

Congrats on the upcoming wedding Sabr. I hear ya about the costs when your side of the family is small----haven't been through it myself but my brother/SIL had the same complaint when niece married a guy with a huge family. Plus the couple's friends and the guest list can get huge. (I think Dee dealt with that too when her dd got married) I like Sue's idea of just deciding on an amount that you can contribute and giving it to them. Rae is old enough to understand the financial realities. And I'm sure that there are some things that you can do to help her that might keep costs down....I'll bet that you can make lovely centerpieces, for instance.

BTW, did you recently have a birthday? I'm thinking that it is in August but not sure of the date....if we missed it, belated Happy Birthday!
