With our new ownership, no, we don't have the day off but will get Presidents' Day off next month (we used to get MLK but not Presidents' Day).  I wonder if ds knows he does....(he's pretty oblivious to these things...)

Weekend - nothing exciting. DH works today (Sat) at his fun weekend job (and will be MANY times through March - grr) so I'll just be running errands. We'll meet up after his work for pizza, then home for a couple favorite shows on TV (Mythbusters and Father Brown). Tomorrow, nothing specific planned other than Downton and Sherlock later - it's to be in the 50s (high 24 yesterday) so hopefully we'll go for a long walk or explore somewhere while the weather is nice. And I'll make a turkey breast that's been in the freezer for a while.

MLK isn't a holiday here-but when you're retired, as are we-doesn't much matter anyway!

But this weekend it is s**wing like crazy out there-the temperature is about -1C. And that isn't bad-though I think by mid-week we are to have another temperature drop, down to about -20C at night, -14C during the day. <sigh> Obviously Winter isn't done with us yet-another 2mo.

Yesterday we were in town-I got fabric to make robes for my hairdresser's salon & even to make myself some dresses. So I will be busy, & that's good. We did those things that had to be done so that this weekend & most of next week we can relax & stay warm & busy inside. A seed catalogue came in the mail-which is making me long for Spring-but I can't even begin my indoor planting yet!

When Mike finished his running around & returned to Fabricland for me, I showed him the patterns for me & asked his opinion on the material-he was quite enthusiastic. He thought if I kept busy, it would help the time pass quickly-he didn't quite say & keep you from whining about it not being Spring...but I read his mind-& that's what he meant!

Last week was unseasonally warm which resulted in the canal being closed for 4 days. Fortunaletely,  the temperature has dropped and It was re-opened by Thursday.  Lots of people are happy about that, including DD. She skates part of her way each day to and from work; makes her long commute so much more fun.

This weekend will be spent working on the house (got painting to finish). The kids will be over for supper on Sunday evening.

Nora, what style will the dresses be? Will any them coordinate with the sweater you are knitting? How is that project coming along?

About starting seeds and a garden---I think you've said in the past that you usually don't put plants in the ground until late May? With the house going on the market in April, is the idea to proceed as if you will be there all summer and then see what happens? While we're on the topic, when do you plan to start looking for a place in your intended new area? I remember that stuff being a bit of a juggle, selling one house and buying another and trying to coordinate everything.

iTea, skating to work sounds kind of fun---not that I'm a skater but it does sound like cool way to mix up the commute, even if only for a few weeks each year. For how long are the canals typically open to skating? When they are not frozen, are they still used for commerce or strictly recreational now? Sorry, I know nothing about Ottawa beyond what you tell usEmbarassed

A while back you mentioned that you were remodeling but I don't think you gave us details---what projects did you do? Did you/dh do most of the work yourself or hire someone?

Sue, enjoy your 50F temps---I heard that there's another cold snap coming in a few days. Did you ever tell us what type of job your dh has for fun? His regular job is ? I.T. at a hospital? or am I thinking of somebody else's dh? lol

Will your turkey breast be traditionally roasted, or will you try something jazzier like Cajun Rub or whatever for variety? If I told my dh I was fixing a large piece of turkey I think he'd strangle me, he got turkey-d out from TG and Xmas!

DH analyzes bone marrow transplant data and manages the humongous (tera-terabytes) database that works with/connects to the global one on BMT patients/data, etc. at Washington U's medical campus.  For fun, he works at Gateway Electronics, a little shop that sells parts to people who still build, solder, etc. - that's been a hobby since he was probably about 8 so getting to work the counter and help people on Saturdays (9-5) is very relaxing for him.

Turkey breast - nothing exciting; either oven or grill; I know dh prefers on the grill so I might do it that way for a change. I guess I could add a rub but as we eat it a good 5 times (frozen in portions) maybe I'll rub half and let the other one be just the usual salt and pepper...

Sue (for it saying it would get to 40 today it's 33 after noon and snowing...)

No three day weekend here for either of us;

The weather is beautiful, high will be about 68F (20C).   I will be going on a bike ride this afternoon.

Tomorrow the DD/BF/kids will be coming for dinner.  DH got a new waffe iron for Christmas and we talked about having everyone over for bruch but the timing does not work well for everyone so we will be having breakfast for dinner.

It is snowing again--the forecast is about 3 inches, and it's only 16F outside, so housework is on the menu.  I'm also at work on Rae's baby shower.  Time is flying, since she's due first week of April.  We have the venue & the menu settled, and now we need to get the invitations out.  Rae sent me the guest list this morning, and I want to beat my head on a wall. Not a SINGLE ADDRESS, and it contains names like Grandma Trudie, Aunt Poochie, and Karen.  About half the list has phone numbers or e-mails.  Rae's S-I-L to be, who is working on the shower with Lolo & I, called & asked if I would help her chase this information down.  I refused.  I told her I'd already sent Rae an email back saying if she couldn't give me a complete name and address, that person would NOT get an invitation.  She's known for months there would be a shower!  Being med free for 6 months has REALLY impacted her--I do NOT know how she is compensating at work.

Other than that little snag, we are proceeding fairly well.  At least I got a COUNT from the list, and so now I can order the favors.  I'm getting bottles of pale pink nail polish, with little hang tags that will say "Pretty in Pink, due April 2014" since they still don't have a name, and probably won't till the kid falls out.  We were also going to include bookplates with the invites, along with a request to buy a children's book instead of a card.  However, bookplates traditionally include the name of the owner of the book, which is a problem (see above), so now I will have to find ones that simply say "Given with Love By _____".  This might be cheaper, since they do not need to be customized.  And HOPEFULLY, I can get them before the invites go into the mail.  I really need to get them out by the end of the week; even then we won't have a month notice.  AND, next weekend Lolo has to work on Saturday, and Bree's birthday is on Sunday.  I had already agreed to help Lolo make a cake in the form of a Minnie Mouse face, with fondant for the ears, bow, and face, which will be a baking first for me.  All this was decided BEFORE Lolo found out she has to work, so now instead of "helping" bake, I am flying solo.  And she will not be helping on the invites, either.  GRRR

Sabr, sounds like you are crazy busy as usual. Good luck on the baking adventure. I hope that your only contribution to Bree's bday party is the cake, and not also hosting a real party.

Here's an idea for the shower invites/address problem: how about sending a mass email that says Save The Date and also asks everybody to send you their mailing address? It would probably be easier for you to get the rest of the email addresses from Rae than mailing addresses. Then YOU would have a master list of email and mailing addresses for the thank you's for the shower, birth announcements, and thank you's for birth gifts. I get that she ought to be responsible for this stuff, but OTOH you, as hostess, want your party to actually be attended, especially after all the work you're putting in to it.
