My Eldest DS is going to Tokyo!

Michael, in Berlin, is going on a vacation to Tokyo.  This all came about rather quickly.  He was informed by his company that he has quite a few vacation days left that he should be using up before the new year.  He had forgotten that as part of his work contract,in his third year of working there that they tack on a few more days of vacation.  Anyway he was pondering what to do, where to go for the vacation time, and he decided on Tokyo.   Which is where he's been wanting to go since a year or more, but plans to go fell through when the friend he was going to go with could not go, in the end.  Now he is going alone.  He leaves on Dec. 8th, and I can't recall when he returns but I think he has almost two weeks of vacation time.  He returns, with a few days to wind down from jet lag, and then he's off with a group of friends to spend Christmas at a house they've rented outside of Berlin.  (Something they did last Christmas too).

He's not come back here for Christmas since he has been in Berlin, but he does prefer to vacation here when the weather is a lot nicer so he comes usually during spring or summer months.  He came for my 60th birthday that year - a total surprise!  And he came this year in June for a music festival that unfortunately got cancelled because of the flood in Calgary.  However, he had lots of time then to spend here at home!

Ray has a cousin whose son and his wife live and work in Tokyo.  Ray was trying to get in touch with his cousin who would then alert her son about Michael being in Tokyo.  Turns out they (cousin, her son and wife) are all in Hawaii on a vacation!  So at some point her son will be returning to Tokyo, and I assume somehow Michael may meet up with him - as that would be nice for Michael to have some sort of familiar contact (even if with a distant relative but who speaks English!) who can hopefully show him around a bit or whatever?

Ray and I are going to Skype with Michael on Saturday before he leaves on Sunday.  I wonder what he'll be seeing, planning to see, or where he might go as I suspect he won't spend all that time in Tokyo itself.  He surely has done some research on this.

I hope so too (extending the acceptance time for the Japan trip - deadline was 12/15)...he's in the middle of finals now so I'm not asking the latest but I have a feeling it's off. Guess I won't give him the Japanese language CD I got him for Christmas....

Shirley, it is so wonderful that kids together don't wait until they are our age to travel. I'm glad things are going well for Michael. I remember Sandy living on rice & noodles when she worked in Japan but eating well in Shanghai. There was such was the difference in the food prices. James went to Germany last weekend. He hasn't posted his update & pics yet on our family fb page but we did hear that he was disappointed with the Chrismas Markets. They went to 5 of them & since he isn't into crafts, it really wasn't is thing. I was suprised to hear they were going for this but they assumed there would be elves, santa, etc. around to enjoy. They did enjoy the hot wine & food. They will be spending Xmas Day at a friend's apt in Amsterdam. We are trying to coordinate our skype times but it is proving to be a bit of a challenge with everyone's schedules.

Sue, so sorry your son's trip may not happen. Hopefully 2 more people will sign up after getting their Xmas money.

He definitely is - here's to hoping others come through with the money (I'm sure that's the holdup).

Oh that's a shame, Sue!  It must be disappointing to your Ds.  I wonder if there will be a change and this can be rescued?

Looks like they have to have 5 confirmed/paid kids (up front payment) for Tokyo at ds's U and they look like with him they only have 3, so I think the trip is off.  :'o(

Dee, we have been following his 'tweets' and he did write a very short email with a few photos he had taken at the Edo Imperial Palace gardens...very pretty.  We don't really expect to hear from him insofar as emails during this trip, but have found it at least interesting to follow his tweets which tell in an abbreviated form what he's been doing and seeing there.  He did mention that eating out is expensive so he said he's been eating more 'fast food' but which for Japanese food is quite good stuff.  Ramen noodle soups for one thing...and he's had a fair amount of sushi by the sounds of it.

It's unfortunate but with so little planning involved in  his taking this vacation at such short notice, a get-together with Ray's cousin's son and his wife in Tokyo have not been possible.  First it was found out that this son and his wife were meeting up with his mother (Ray's cousin) in Hawaii on a vacation.  Now that Ray's cousin is back home in Canada, she wrote to say that her son will be on a month long business trip outside of Tokyo - i.e. soon after if  not already after returning home to Tokyo.  So Michael won't be meeting him after all...too bad.

Ray and I are eager to Skype with Michael when he returns home to Berlin so as to  hear in more detail his impressions of Japan and what he did there.  Not so long after he returns home and he'll be going to a rented house outside of Berlin (in some country setting/village) with friends for Christmas.  I believe Michael will be flying or arriving home on the 20th.

Shirley, have you heard from Michael since he arrived in Japan? It's an interesting place but very crowded & expensive as some one else mentioned. In Sandy's modeling days, she worked there for several wks a few times. Unfortunately, she never had time to see much of the sites but the nightclubs, lol. My niece lived 6 yrs in a small town in Japan teaching English. She loved it there. Dee

It is available online at Amazon.com if you are willing to buy!  Support a Canadian author at the same time! LOL.  (He actually lives in Calgary).

Oh yes, I almost forgot, Sue!  Yes, it would be great to go there...I think...I am not very familiar with Japan except whatever I've seen here and there in magazines, movies, etc.  So I think it would be quite the cultural shock, maybe?  Though I think it would be very interesting to experience the art, design and culture as your Ds will experience.  By the way, I've mentioned it before some time ago, (I think) but if you want to read a funny book about hitchiking in Japan then read the book by Will Ferguson titled "Hitching Rides with Buddha" - written about his hitchhiking in Japan, from it's southern most tip to the northern regions.  Funny and interesting!
