Wow-really? Running water and evelators? Elevators? That one suprises me the most I think. What a facinating place with soooo much history. The girls are going to learn so much!

Yes, they had them under the stage and they used ropes and counterweights to get them to go up and down. I don't know if you can really see in the pics of the understage area, but there are some square columns and they are set in a square- those were the elevators and they know it because there were channels cut into the stone for the ropes.

Water was really important to the Romans and they had the aquaducts to provide running water and bathing and hygene was also very important, so everyone- slaves included, was allowed to bath. The guide said that the running water made it possible for people to come there and spend the whole day there and all of the "entertainment" was free. Watching a lion maul a person doesn't strike me as entertainment, but I guess for them it was.

I know, it is really amazing isn't it? Makes you feel kind of sad about our way of razing things to the ground to build new things. All of that history is lost.
